THEATRE ROYAL

“AS YOU LIKE IT.”

This, at all times, welcome play was given last night for Miss Beaudet’s benefit. It is needless to say that this very popular young aclreis made a charming Rosalind. Acting with great grace and sprightliness, her render ing was thoroughly enjoyable. Several leading actresses have, at various times, taken the part in Christchurch with great success. Comparing Miss Beaudet’s efforts with those of her predecessors, it may be said that the distinguishing feature in her performance was its freshness. Her singing of the “ Cuckoo Song" was delightful, for she threw into it a playfulness full of reality. Mr Reynolds played the part of Orlando with much quiet farce. The scenes between him and Rosalind were well worked out. Herr Bandmann’s Touchstone, though hardly in bis line, was a scholarly rendering. Mr Cathcart was not so successful as usual in Jacques. Messrs Delmain and Charles Hall were good as Oliver and the double of Duke Frederick and the Banished Duke, Miss Crawford made a decided bit in Audrey, throwing into her rendering of it a broad humour which took the audience immensely. Taken altogether the piece was a decided success, and well sustained the reputation of the company as Shakesperian actors. The same evenness throughout the characters which has distinguished this company from many others which have appeared here, was noticeable, and added much to the general enjoyment. Tonight “ Ingomar” will bo given, with Herr Bandmann in the title rOIe and Miss Beaudet as Faithenia.
