NORTH RAKAIA BOARD OF CONSERVATORS.

Tho odjourned meeting of this Board was held at their offices, Southbrldge, on Wednesday forenoon. Present—Messrs B. J. Leo (ohairman), E. Lookhcad, and D. Marshall. Xhe Chairman stated that the test cases against tho ratepayers had come to an abrupt termination, tho presiding Magistrate, Mr Beswiok, having informed him that he did not feel justified in giving a decision under tho circumstances. Messrs Harper and Soott, to save any further delay, had suggested that • case be stated for tho Court of Appeal, to vrhioh Messrs Izird and Lougbnan had agreed, »nd tho matter now only awaited the sanction of tho Board. Mr Lookhead thought the matter ought to be kept in abeyance till such time as their successors were appointed. Mr Marshall wao of opinion that the case should bo carried through. Ultimately it was resolved that tho suggestions of Messrs Harper and Soott bo acted on, and that the chairman write them to that effect. The Chairman •tatod that he had forwarded the petition praying for fresh legislation to provide for the legal election of a freeh Board, and that the ■first election would bo for five now members. Mr L. V. Desborough was formally appointed collector for the Board, and tho chairman was authorised to affix the official seal of the Board to such appointment. The rate book, 1881 2, as prepared in accordance with tho Act, was accepted and signed by the Board. The secretary stated that the total rateable value under the now assessment was £3314 lower than the previous year, although the township ooolions had been moterially increased, and the rates to provide for tho sinking fand would have to bo altered. The chairman was empowered to sign the leases of reserves, which were not yet executed. The meeting then ad journed.
