POLICE COURT.
CHRISTOHURCH. Tt/bsdav, Maboh 15. [Before R. Walton and L. E. Nathan, Eiqs., J.P.'s.] Assault. —W. G. Rogers was charged with assaulting J. J. Turnbull, an assistant bailiff. Mr Stringer appeared for prisoner. J. J. Turnbull daposod that, seeking to arrest prisoner on a warrant on the previous day, prisoner resisted, saying he bad filed. A scuffle ensued, during which witnoss wag knocked down and one of his fingers waa dislocated. Deteotive Neal deposed to seeing a struggle between the parties. Ho arrested prisoner. Prisoner, sworn, stated that Turnbull did not produce a warrant until after the disturbance ; not in fact until after the arrest had been made by Neal. Mr Stringer dwelt on the discrepancy of the evidence as to the production of the warrant by Turnbull. The Magistrate said there was no excuse for the assault, and fined prisoner £5, or fourteen days' imprisonment with hard labour. Lt/nacy itbom: Dbink.—W. Fowler, on this charge, was sent to Lyttelton gaol for eight days for medical treatment. Labobnt. —£arah Ann Boote was remanded till Friday next on a charge of this nature.
Embez/.lhmknt. —J. J. Donovan was brought up charged with appropriating to his own uae 17s 61 belonging to A. McEachen, and received by him as collector of moneys for advertisements wbioh appeared in a programme of sports at the Athletic Society's meeting. Prosecutor deposed to employing prisoner on wages. Prisoner, as his servant, collected 17s 6d from Mr Hooper, for whioh he failed to account. Prisoner pleaded that he had been associated with McEichen on shares, and that the deficiency was merely a matter of account. The Benoh, after hearing the evidence, thought the defence good and'dig' missed tho case.
