HEATHCOTE REGATTA.
Patron, Mr J. T. Fisher, M.H.B. ; Commodore, Mr J. L. Coster; Starter, Mr F. Pavitt; Umpire, Mr P. Digby; Judge, Mr H. Thomson; Hon. Treasurer, Mr J. O. Jones ; Hon. Secretary, Mr Shepley C. Kesteven. Tho annual regatta on tho Estuary took place on Saturday. The weather was all that could be desired for rowing, only a shower or two falling. The water was splendidly calm, and the course, which was laid out by Mr J. Day, though there were some grumblers, was a good one. The attendance was not overwhelmingly large, but still there were a good few present. Mr Button’s band played during the day some capital selections, and added to the enjoyment of those present. The winning was pretty evenly divided as to the number of events between the Kaiapoi Union and Canterbury Clubs, though the former succeeded in carrying off the big event of the day, viz., the Champion Fours. The same club also won the Junior Fours. Mr Thomson and Mr Monck both acted as judges during tho day ; Mr F. Digby, with a gallant crew, braving the dangers of the deep in an outrigger as umpire ; whilst that veteran boating man, Mr F. Pavitt, discharged the onerous duties of starter with success. The following were the events pulled off : Junior Pairs (under 21)—1 mile._ Prize, £B. Cure (Cure Boating Club; —C. Wright, bow; A Winterbourn, stroke; F. After about a quarter of a mile had been gone, the Canterbury men got a lead of three lengths, but at the next turn Kaiapoi once more assumed charge of affairs with a strong lead, Canterbury coming next, and the Union out of the race. Nearing home the Canterbury men put on a spurt, but were unable to overhaul the Kaiapoi crew, who, pulling a nice level stroke, won comfortably by three lengths, thus securing the cup, this being their second win. The victory was heartily cheered. Time—l3min. IGJsecs. Junior Double Sculls (under 21) —1 mile. Prize, £B. Nameless (U.B.C.) —Gilmour and Fuller, W. H.
