WANGANUI RACES. [PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.] WELLINGTON, March 10. Beautifnl weather favored the opening day of the Wanganui Autumn Meeting. The attendance was somewhat less than last year, not more than 2500 being present. Sapling Stakes. One mile. Mr Redwood’s Dauphin, by Traduoer ... 1 Mr Walters’ Slander filly, by Hippocampus 2 Mr Powdrell’s Ely 3 Nine started. Mr Redwood’s colt came away from the field when rounding the turn for home, and with Slander filly, ran a slashing race up the straight, the Northerner not being able to get on terms. Time —Imin, Sliseo. Wanganui Stakes Handicap of 250 sovs two miles. Randwick, 7st 21b (Rudings) 1 Libeller, Vat 51b (Taylor) 2 Natator, Bst 61b .. _ ... (Derritt) 3 Redeemer, King Quail and Rocket also started. There were 324 tickets in the totalisator, of which 36 were on the winner. Natator was quickest away, but Redeemer soon rushed to the front and cut out the running, the pace, however, being very slow. Randwick and Natator were next in order, then Libeller and Rockett, all holding back and wanting the pace made for them. Coming to the grand stand the first time. Redeemer still led his stable companion, Rocket being close up second, Libeller third, Natator, hugging the rails, fourth, King Quail and Randwick bringing up in rear. At a mile and a quarter King Quail went on third, Mr Quinliven’s pair being still in command. Rocket soon after fell back, and Natator and Libeller began to close up, Randwick also coming to closer quarters. At a mile and a-balf the field were all together, the favorite in a good position. On rounding the turn Redeemer fell back to fourth place, and Natator, Libeller and Randwick came into the straight nock and neck. All the jockeys began to ride, and the backers of each one of the trio had their hopes raised for a time. Randwick, with a great effort of speed, got the best of it opposite the stand, end maintained it to the end, staving off a determined rush made by Libeller who was beaten by a head, Natator a third of a length away third, Redeemer fourth, King Q.uail fifth, and Rocket sixth. Time—3mins. 45J secs. Town Plate, of 25 sove.; welter weights ; one mile and a distance. Foul Play, list 21bs (Rae) 1 Billingsgate, list ... ... (French) 2 Oamella, 10st 121 b (M'lvor) 3 Frailty and Patanella also ran. There was £177 in the totalisator, of which £69 was on t he winner. Oamella got away with the lead, and made the sunning, Billingsgate and Foul Play next. After halt a mile had been covered, only Foul Play and Billingsgate were left in it, and they came into the straight neck and neck. Foul Play gradually forged ahead and finally won by half a length. Oamella was a bad third. Flying Handicap of 125 sots. One mile and a distance. Sir George, Gat 71b ... ... (Herd) 1 Dan, Gst 31b ... ... ... (Hadfield) 2 Randwick, 7st 31b... | (Endings) 3 There was £324 in the totalisator, of which £l9 was on the winner, Randwick was the favorite, Dan being next in demand. Randwick’s fraotiousnoss at the post delayed the si art for a time, but finally the flag fell when the horses were well in line. Randw'ck and Dan first showed in front, and led past the stond, Soukar just in front of Sir George. As they made the lop turn Dan got his head in front, and with Randwick on
hi* whip hand made the pace a 1 olinker. At about two lengths interval came Sonkar, Sir George next, the others tailing off and evidently out-placed. At the half-mile post Sir George made up his ground and took third place. He still continued to gain, and'when opposite the cattle yards he was within a length of Randwiek. Coming up to the turn for home Sir George got level with the two leaders, and the three came into the straight together. The jockeys on Randwiok and Dan began to ride to hold their own with the colt, but he came away full of running and soon got half a length to the good, which he held to the end, Dan finishing half a length in front of Randwiek. Time—2min 14 I-sth secs. Second Day. the cur. Sir George 1 Libeller 2 Natator 3 Won by a length. Ten started. Time—4tuins. lOlsecs.
