NEWS OF THE DAY.
Thb Governor's Visit. The Mayor of Lyttolton requests the business people of the Port to olose their premises during the forenoon to-morrow, on the occasion of the Governor's visit to the Port.
Magistrate's Cotjbt, Lyttblton.—The presiding Justices at this Court this morning were Dr. J. T. Rouse and F. Ronald, Esq. J. Johnson, for being drunk, was fined 10s, and for breaking a chair was, upon the request of the owner of it, let off on the nominal peralty of paying the value of the article broken. A seaman belonging to the barque Elizabeth Graham, who had created a disturbance on board, knocked over the watchman, disobeyed the oaptain's orders, and used obscene language, was fined 40s, or seven days on one charge, and sentenoed to seven days on the other.
Out-Doob Mitsic.—Mr Hamilton's band will perform on Latimer square this evening. As on the last occasion considerable inconvenianca was experienced by the crowding of the public on the band, it ia hoped they will not repeat the conduct of last week. Lyttblton Naval Bbioadb.—The appointment of Dr. J. T. Bouse as honorary assistant surgeon appears in the last issue of the "Gazette."
Robbbby AT Mbthvbn.—On Saturday a box belonging to ths barman at the Methven Hotel was broken into and robbed of nearly £6O in gold, silver, cheques, orders, and notes. The box was in one of the bedrooms upstairs. Couet Fbks.—The rules of practice and procedure in Resident Magistrates' Courts, and fees to be taken in Magistrates' Courts, under the Imprisonment for Debt Abolition Aot, 1874, are published in the " Gazette" of March 3rd.
Ghabitablb Aid Boabd.—The ordinary meeting of this Board should have been held yesterday, but owing to the absence of a quorum it lapsed. Mr W. Montgomery was the only member present. The business on the order paper was unimportant. Uppbb Abhbubton Valuation Boll.— The time for transmitting the Valuation roll to the Road Board has been extended till April Ist. The Valuation List will be open for inspection and objections received thereto until April 15th. Littlb Baeaia School.—On Monday last there were only three ohildren present at the above school in the morning, and in the afternoon nil. The residents of the district some time ago petitioned the Board of Education for the master to be shifted, but their wish was not acceded to. Nobth Rakaia Boabd of Consbbvatobs. —A special meeting of the North Bakaia Board of Conservators was called for Tuesday afternoon at the office of the Board, Southbridge, to consider a proposition made by the solicitors for the defendants in the late action for recovery of rates, but for want of a quorum, was ad-journed. Akaboa B.M. Coubt.—At this Court on Tuesday, before W. B. Toes will, and J. Q. H. Saxton, Esqs., J.P.'s, Colin Campbell was charged with a breach of the Harbor regulations by depositing a quantity of ballast in Barry's Bay. Defendant pleaded ignorance of the law, and was dismissed with a caution. In the adjourned case Okain's Bay Boad Board v J. Smith judgment went by default for the amount claimed and oosts.
Eaiapoi Begatta.—A meeting of the committee was held on Tuesday evening at the Counoil Chamber, Dr. Dudley, coinmjdore, in the chair. The programme of prizes was drawn up as published in our advertising columns. It was decided that entries be closed on Saturday at noon. Mr J. W. Ellen, an ex-Mayor of Kaiapoi, has since the meeting offered a oup, value £2 2s, to be given as a prize for sculling race or sweepstake fours. SOUTHBBIDOB PUBLIC LIBBABY.—A publio meeting of subscribers to the library was held on Saturday afternoon, Mr E. J. Lee in the ohair. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—Chairman, E. J.Lee (re-eleoted) ; secretary and treasurer, H. M. Lee (re-elected); committee, Dr. Chapman, Dr. Malono, Thos. Wauchop, Alex. Cameron, and J. Lucas. It was decided to purchase new books, the seleotion to be left to the committee. A vote of thanks was passed to the chairman, and the meeting dosed.
Stack fibb at Nobth Rakaia.—Yesterday afternoon six staoks, the produce of about eighty acres of crops, consisting of wheat, barley, and oats, were totally destroyed by fire. It is not known how the fire originated, but there were no traces of any burning haying come along the ground. The fire must hare originated in the stacks themselves, and was most probably the work of an incendiary. The stacks were the property of a man named Bhams, and were insured in the New Zealand Insurance Company.
Easthe Sfoets at Southbbidgb. A committee meeting was held at Sutherland's Hotel on Monday evening, when there was a full attendance, Mr Karman in the chair. It was unanimously agreed that Mr Lucas, head measter of the school, should be requested to take charge of the children's sports, and that the seoretary wait on that gentleman at onse. It was decided that programme as prepared at last meeting be adopted and advertised at once. Subscription lists were handed round, with a very fair response. After a vote of thanks to the chairman the meeting adjourned till Monday at the Boyal Hotel.
Abhbt/eton School Committbb.—At the usual meeting of the above committee, held last Tuesday evening, a report from the master was read. It proposed to close the school during the absence of the teachers at the annual examination, but, after discussion, the oommittee resolved not to do go. Mr St. Hill animadverted on the conduct of the Board in taking away the teachers at suoh a time, when they could easily have been examined during the Christmas holidays. The maeter oomplained of want of room in the infant school, and some of the little ones had been turned away. It was resolved to male room for the little ones in the large school. Ashbubton Exhibition.—The committee of the above exhibition met on Tuesday evening, when arrangements were made for the reception of the Governor. It was understood that His Excellency will arrive from Timaru on the 24th inst. by special train which would be stopped opposite the Town Hall, where he would be presonted with an illuminated address. It was agreed to make the charge of admission to the exhibition for the first two hours of the first day five shillings, for the remainder of the day* two shillings and sixpence, and after that one shilling. His Worship the Mayor and Messrs Oox and Bullock were appointed a committee to arrange for the reception of the Governor. Messrs Jacobson, Mayo, Friedlander, Wood, Roberts and Oompton were appointod a subcommittee to arrange exhibits, Kaia*oi Pbesbytbbian Chtjbch.—The induotion of the Bev. Bobt. McGiegor to the pastorate of this church takes place to-day. Alfobd Fobbst Cbmetbbt.—Messrs W. T. Chapman, A. MacFarlane, C. Grieve, B. Boulton, and W. Brown, have been gazetted trustees of the above cemetery. Akaboa Whabves.—We learn from a notice published in the "Gazette" of the 3rd instant, that the management of the Akaroa Wharf and the wharf locally known as Daly'a has beon vested in the Borough Counoil for a period of fourtoen years.
Entkbtaikmbnt. The Dauntless Lodge will give an entertainment in the Templar Hall to morrow evening. In addition to the usual attractions of songs and recitations, there will be a distribution of fruit during the evening. It is expected that there will be a good display of flowers, as each person is requested to bring a bouquet, which will be sent to the Hospital at the close of the meeting. For particulars, see advertisement in another column of this paper. CHBISTCHtTBCH ASSHSBMBN COUBT.—The Oourt for hearing appeals against the assessment of the city for the present year was held this morning in the Counoil Chamber, before Mr Caleb Wbitefoord. About forty cases wore set down for hearing, but only five persons appeared to support their objections. A few cases were sustained, the total reductions made for the whole of Ohristchurch amounting to only £584. The proceedings occupied a couple of hours, a timo which contrasts favorably with the experience of former years, when the Court usually nut ovor four days. Prior to its rising, the Judge complimented Mr Cuff, the assessor, on the tatisfac tory result, remarking that it spoke well for his knowledge of the ratable value of city properties. Tomorrow morninp, at eleven o'clock, the objections against the assessment of Sydenham will be heard.
PhIIXIPSTOWK CONGBBQATIONAI. MISSION Chuboh. —On Tuesday evening an entertainment, consisting of readings, recitations, and music, was given to an audience that filled the building. Rev. H. Williams, of Trinity Church, presided, and stated the proceeds were for the Sunday-school, which was exceptionally flourishing in efficiency and numbers. Dialogues were then rendered by Messrs. Widdowson, Faulkner, Alexander ; recitations and readings by Mesßrs. Parker, Porter, and Higging ; and songs and instrumental music by Mrs Wilson, Misses Hyman, Evans, Woodham, McCormio, Dear, and Mr Johnson, Owen, and Shure. After a few words from Mr Owen on the advantages of such ploseant and profitable evenings, the National Anthem concluded the enjoyable programme Papanut Rbobbation G/Bor/ND. The Papanui Recreation Ground has been brought under the Publio Domains Act 1860, and powers under the Act have been delegated to the Papanui Domain Board. The following have been gazetted members of the Board : Messrs Albert Miles Philpott, David Thomas, Diedrich Kruse, William Munro, James Jackson, Oeorge Harper, Robert Marshall Cresswell, James Low, and William Moir. The first meeting will be held on April 4*.
Thb Oldest Pbintbb in Nbw Zba.io.kd. —We take the following from the"Wanganui Chronicle," of the 2nd instant: —" Mr Jumes Birohall, probably the oldest printer in New Zealand, died suddenly at hi» residence in Q-uyton street, yesterday forenoon. The deceased was ono of the first printers who came to New Zealand, and assisted to print the first newspaper whioh'was published in the colony. He camo from Tasmania, where he had been for a number of years employed on the " Courier " and " Colonial Register." His decease will be regretted by a large circle of friends." He was sixty-two yeais age at the time of his death.
Thb Latest Fashion. —According to the London " World " " footmen are going out, and footwomen are taking their place. Dining the other night in Eaton place, the door was opened by one of the latter in a most, oharming and becoming livery. Black and white mob cap for head-dress, stand-up collar, with white cravat, and a small pin in it, rich brown cloth coat, with livery buttons, cut somewhat like a man's hunting coat, and a buff waistooat, with a High Church collar—such was the uniform. I was so struck with the upper portion of the dross that I never thought of looking at the extremities; but I fancy ray eyes once got a glimpso, going upstairs, of red stockings and shoes with silver buckles. During dinner four winsome lassies, all similarly attired, waited on mo hand and foot, and never was a dinner mora deftly handed and served."
Akaboa Liobnsino Coubt. The adjourned quarterly licensing meeting was held on Tuesday, March Bth, before J. Aylmer, Esq., R.M., A. C. Knight, Esq., W. B. Toss, will, Esq., J. H. Saxton, Eeq., J.P.'s, licensing commissioners. Thos. Macintosh applied for a temporary transfer of license of the Little Akaloa Hotel to Thos. Connors. Granted. John Olphert, of the Little River Hotel was reported for a breach of oonditione of his lioense. The Bench gave notice that if any more complaints were made they would have to cancel the license. The Benoh also called the attention of the police to complaints which had been made against at least two of the houses in the district for the very inferior and adulterated liquor they are selling, and instructed the police to take the nooessary steps to procure samples of the same, with the view of submitting them to analysis.
