[eeutee’s teleqeams.] LONDON, March 7. The Markets. Consols remain at 99j. New Zealand securities are unchanged. Adelaide wheat, ox warehouse, 50s; Adelaide flour, ex warehouse, 345; Now Zealand wheat, ox ship, 455; Australian beef tallow has advanced Is per cwt, and is now quoted at 33s 6d; best mutton tallow remains at 36s Gd, WoolAt the wool sale to-day, 8000 bales were catalogued. There was a fair demand. Trade Returns. The Board of Trade returns for the past month published to-day showed that the imports amounted to £'36,625,000, being an increase of £3,375,000 as compared with the corresponding mouth of last year. The exports reached a total of £16,812,500, and show an increase of £312,500 under the same comparison. Prospects of Peace In the House of Commons to-day the Premier was questioned regarding the statement in the “ Daily News ” that a week’s armistice had boon proclaimed in the Transvaal. Mr Gladstone, in reply, confirmed the announcement, and added that the armistice had boon agreed to to enable the Boor President to reply to the conditions of peace which had been submitted to him by Sir Evelyn Wood. Mr Gladstone further stated that during
the time of the armisti** Sir Evelyn Wood would be allowed to revictual the British garrison in the Transvaal. Shipping. Arrived—Chaudiere, from Napier. LONDON, March 8. Hurricanes in Scotland. "Very severe hurricanes, accompanied hy heavy falls of snow, have been experienced over the greater part of Scotland during the past twenty-four hours. Groat damage has been done to property. Storms at Sea. Terrific gales have raged on the coast and numerous shipwrecks, resulting in great loss, have been caused. So far as can be at present ascertained, fully 100 persons have been drowned in vessels which have foundered at ports and off the coast. Irish Crime. The Irish Judges of Assize, in their charges to the Grand Juries at the Courts which opened yesterday in the Irish provinces, again took occasion to refer to tha alarming state of the country, and doplorod in forcible terms the continued occurrence of an enormous amount of undetected crime. CAPETOWN, March 8, Beef for the Britishers. Intelligence has been received from Natal that, taking advantage of the provisions of the armistice with the Boers, Sir Evelyn Wood has already despatched convoys of provisions to the British garrisons at Pretoria, Wakkerstoom, Standesta, and other places in the Transvaal.
