Great interest was shown in the concluding shots of each championship, but excellent order was maintained. Paynter has fired most steadily during the match, and his victory is decidedly popular. He was champion in 1877. The closing scene of the carbine championship was very exciting, McLean, of Wanganui, being loudly cheered when bo made 39 out of the possible 40 at 400 yds, thus tying the winner Armstrong, but taking second honors, as Armstrong was highest in the seventh match. Match No. 9, Volunteers only.—2oo and 500 yards; ten shots at each distance. The Carbine aggregate prize takers are Armstrong (Thames champion), 273 ; McLean (Wanganui), 273 ; P. France (Wellington), 271 ; H. Dixon (Wellington), 267.
