[By Telegraph.] [Per s.s. Ringarooma at the Bluff.] MELBOURNE, March 1. The “ Argus” states that the Exhibition officials have imposed on certain exhibitors unwarranted Customs charges, and publishes a list, showing where the charges were made beyond the amounts paid to the Customs. Explanations were made that the overcharges for Customs, &0., on exhibitors’ goods will be adjusted upon a final settlement of accounts. The maximum charges were at first imposed in order to secure against the possibility of loss. The “Argus” of Monday reiterated the statements of overcharging the dues for wharfage, maintaining that the Commissioners were in full possession of all necessary information for arriving at the correct charges at the time of the opening of the Exhibition. Nearly 6000 shares of the Land Credit Bank of Australia (now issue) are now allotted, leaving 8000 still on offer. A rumor was circulated on Friday that the police had received a clue to the robbery of the Tararua gold. It turned out to be entirely without foundation, and now it is believed that the gold was stolen at Hobart, Tho “ Argus ” states that, at the request of several foreign States, application for space at the International Wool Exhibition at the Crystal Palace, England, has been extended to April, and they understand that Now Zealand has applied for a large space. SIDNEY, March 1.
The Corporation are taking proceedings against the contractors and the architect of the Town Hall on account of rotten foundations of the building. The pulling down and rebuilding will cost £7OOO. Sir Archibald Meckie has resumed his profession hero as counsel in a libel case against the “ Bulletin.” The " Herald ” states 178,000 bales of wool have already been shipped this season, 20,000 more being now in port. The “Herald’s” Noumea correspondent advises that the Loire has sailed with 1200 liberated prisoners for Franco. Attempts ot escape occur frequently.
