The following telegram from the Wellington correspondent of tho 41 Southland News ” has been circulated by the Press Association:—“A new loon of £3,000,000 is to be raised as soon as time allows. The necessary papers left by the out going mail. It is stated that the Government have also prepared an exhaustive report re tho value of the property and works of the Colonial railways, which is thought to indicate selling the lines to the Brogdens, and the formation of a syndicate in opposition to Sir J. Vogel.” 1 have authority for stating positively that not one word of truth is in this highly imaginative story, which has not even the slightest foundation. Much surprise is felt at the Press Association making itself the medium of spreading such absurd political canards. Tho Government have received intelligence that tho Wairarapa Maoris are about to hold a monster meeting shortly at Te Ore-ore, and have issued invitations far and wide. They aro very anxious that it should be clearly understood by the Europeans to be merely a friendly social gathering, of no political •significance whatever. The Natives have been preparing for this meeting for a long time by collecting provisions and saving money to defray its cost. The idea originated with Paroa, on East Coast prophet, but it seized on the Maoris like a mania, and they have been full of it ever since. It baa been pointed out to the Maoris that monstrous waste and expense, and subsequent privations, would be the only practical result of the intended feast, but they refused to be dissuaded, and are determined that it shall surpass all previous efforts of the kind.
