ROAD BOARDS.
COURTENAY. A meeting of this Board was held on Tuesday, March Ist, Present —Hon. Colonel Brett (chairman), Messrs Mathias, Ooutts, and Gough. Tenders for grubbing up and removing gone and broom from the river bed of the Hawkins wore opened, and four ten. ders accepted, one fifth piece of the work for which no tender was received to be again advertised. Correspondence was read as follows ;—From the Board of Conservators, asking to be informed as to the rateable value for 1881 of that portion of the district which lies within the boundaries of the Conservators’ district, and what remuneration will be required for collecting the Waimakariri rate for 1881. Clerk to forward information asked for. From the Bank of New Zealand re fixed deposit of the Board. From the assistant engineer for Canterbury railways in reply to the letter of the Board of November 19th last, advising the Board that level crossing over tho main south lino between Rolleston and Burnham, as applied for, would be at once proceeded with. From Mr A. Beatty, complaining of tho state of the Greendale and Selwyn Valley road, near his property. The surveyor’s report showed the necessary work to have been done. From Mr J. Holmes, requesting an extension of time on account of harvest operations, for stubbing, cutting, and removing gorse from roads adjoining the Bangor estate. Granted. A motion was brought forward proposing that the Local Elections Act, 1876, bo brought into force in the district. It was resolved that the chairman be authorised to call a meeting of ratepayers of the district, to ascertain their views on the subject, agreeably to the requirements of the Local Elections Act, 1876. The clerk was instructed to obtain a map of the county from the Selwyn County Council, and to advertise for tenders for several different works of formation and metalling. A few small accounts having been passed for payment the Board adjourned till Tuesday, March 22nd.
ELLESMERE, The usual monthly meeting o£ member* of this .'Board was held in the office, Lees ton, on Tuesday, the Ist inst. Present—All the members. Correspondence was read from Mr Douglas, asking permission to ereot horseposto opposite his shop. From Mr George Duncan, complaining of the bad state of the road from sections Nos. 25647 and 29226 to tramway reserve. A petition was laid before the Board, signed by Mr E. Withel and others, asking for formation on road from Boundary creek to Moore's corner. Granted. A letter was read from Mr Withel, offering to supply shingle at 3d per yard. Mr John Manaon waited on the Board re the state of a Government drain on his land. Board decided to shingle Cant's road, Messrs O. Campbell and J. Williamson waited on the Board, requesting them to put a culvert at the end of new road on Mr Oormick’s land. Not granted. Mr J. B. Campbell applied to have Triphook’s road formed. Granted. On the motion of Mr Frankish, it was resolved to call for tenders for the Loeston footpaths in two months. After a lot of minor matters had been disposed of, the overseer’s report and accounts were examined and passed for payment.
