COMMERCIAL.
The Customs duties collected at Christchurch on Monday, February 28th, were as follows: — Spirits, .£IBO 18s 2d; tobacco, £SO 2s; wine, £l2 3s 6d; sugar, £4B 3s; tea, £lB lls 2d; goods by weight, £IBO 19s Id; ad valorem, £76 10s. Total, £573 7s 9d. The total sales at the sitting of tho Waste Lands Board, held at Christchurch, in the month of February, were: —Ordinary—Rural, 2052 acres 3 roods 20 perches; town, 8 acres 0 roods 2 parches ; under Village Settlement Aot, deferred payments, 102 acres 1 rood 1 perch. Total acreage 501d—2163 acres 0 roods 23 porches. Total value —£5247 8s 3d. During the same period, refunds were made on accoiiat of former purchasers in tho sum of £2474 7s Bd. PROPERTY SALES. Mr Charles Clark reports a private sale yesterday of a piece of land at junction of Kilmora street with Cambridge terrace and Colombo street, for the snm of £ISOO. At bis auction sale yesterday, the only property disposed of was a cottage and section off Edgware road, Knightstown, which realized £2OO. Tho nine acres adjoining Middlepark and Redwood’s stnd farms, Epsom, was not offered, bat will bo pnt np for sale in about four weeks from date. THE ENGLISH MARKETS. Tho following is Messrs Milks Bros, and Oo.’s Colonial Produce Report, dated London, January 14th: — WOOL. Business has been in a very quiet condition since our last, with but few private enquiries from the Continent or for Home consumption. A very fair business is doing in the North, and although trade on the Continent is still dull, yet tho consumption is pretty good, and stocks ■everywhere must be very light. The date for the opening of tho February sales has not yet been fixed, but the new arrivals for that series are as follows : Boles. New Sonth Wales and Queensland ... ... ... ... 14,580 Victoria 22,930 Sonth Australia 7,150 Western Australia 129 New Zealand 4,170 Cope 24,080 Total 73,029 And 16,000 bales old wool. WHEAT AND FLOUR. The stocks in granary having considerably diminished, with a falling off in our home, grown deliveries, onr market has hardened to some extent, although the demand is not active, for aa the quantity on passage is large, and supplies in America continne heavy, onr millers are not disposed to purchase beyond their immediate requirements. There are now 322 wheat cargoes, ■with 2,202,500 qrs., on passoge to the United Kingdom, against 293 with 2,893,000 qrs. in the corresponding week of 1880. and the visible supply in America is reported to bo 28,600,000 bushels. The continental demand for wheat has improved a little, and cargoes off coast are rather firmer, 49s being nownhtninabl for Australian, Victorian wheat for prompt shipment is worth 46a 6d to 47a o. f. and i. orders. We quote ex granary, Sonth Australian wheat, 50s 6d to >ib 6d ; Victorian, 60s to 51s ; New Zealand, long berried, 47b to sls ; ordinary, 45s to 48s; and inferior, 40s to 445, all per 4961b5. Flour—Australian, superfine, 34s to 35s ; housebold, 31s to 34s ; New Zealand, superfine, 32s to 34a per 2801bs ; New Zealand fine malting barley, 34s to 42a per qr.: New Zealand beans, 45s to 47s per qr.; New Zealand oats, fine, 28a to 31a per qr.; common feed, 20a to 24s per qr.; New Zealand peas, 46s to 4°a per qr.; New Zealand oatmeal, 190 a to 210- per ton. TALLOW Ann niDKa. Tho tallow market has been very steady during tbe past fortnight. Tho sales opened on Friday last with a good demand, and to-day, notwithstanding the large quantity offered, viz., 3022 casks, tho demand was extremely good and mil sold. Fine mutton advanced Is ; middling, same as last week to fid dearer ; beef, 3d to 6d higher. The stock in importers’ hands is now rodaced to 6500 casks. Hides at the sales yesterday wore only in moderate request, but previous prices were paid for tho portion sold. We quote—New Zealand, heavy, sid ; and light and cows, Sd to 5Jd. PRESERVED MEATS. The demand for tinned moats has improved during tho past week, tho inquiries having been principally confined to beef, although some parcels of fancy sorts have been disposed of. The shipments of fresh meat from America have been heavy, bat slightly better prices are now obtainable. Bank rate raised yesterday from 3 per cent, to 3i per cant.
