A Rhsidbnt Maoisteate bob Lyttelton. —Dr. W. Donald was formally installed B.M. for Lyttelton this morning. Geoqeaphy Exteaoedisaby. —A schoolteacher of late was questioning a boy somewhat advanced in years respecting his knowledge of geography. After exploiting the world at largo with no considerable success, he asked him to point out England, whioh after some difficulty was done. By way of clearing the road to a question about London the teacher asked, “ What is a capital town P” “ Why, the place where you oan get the most capital things.” The real moaning of the word having been explained the pupil was asked what was the capital of England. A dead silence. “Now what,” said the teacher, “is the principal plaoe that you have heard talked of in connection with England. Think now, and tell me, for that place is the capital.” The pupil put on his considering cap and replied,—“ Why the capital of England must be the Old Country! ” Quaetbbly Licensing Mbktins at Poet. —An application for a license was made by Mr J. K. Qannaway, for his honse in Dampier Bay, Lyttelton. Mr H. N. Nalder appeared for the applicant, and pointed out to the Commissioner that the house was a long way removed from any licensed house, and as it was now occupied as a boarding • house and family hotel, the granting of a license was a real necessity. In support of the application, petitions containing upwards of two hundred signatures were submitted to the Court. There was also a counter petition, with between thirty and forty signatures upon it. Messrs Ware and Jones, the contractors for the graving dock, objected, as likely to be productive of accidents among their employes. The police supported this objection, and the application was refused. Transfers of the licenses held by W. Howie to Charles Johnson, Victoria Dining Booms, and from A. Hardecke, Albion Hotel, to B. H. Grantham, and from F. Connolly to J. Robertson, British Hotel, were granted. The Commissioners wore Or. Donald (chairman), and Messrs T. H. Potts, J, D. Macpheraon and Dr. J. T. Bouse.
Aquatic. —lt will be seen from our telegrams this morning that the Canterbury crew were victorious in their match with the Otago Bowing Club.
Habvebt Home. —Tho first harvest home in connection with the School of Agriculture will be celebrated at Lincoln on Thursday next.
Mb T. K. Dow. —This gentleman, who is now on a special agricultural reporting tour in connection with the Melbourne “ Leader,” visited the Agricultural School Farm at Lincoln yesterday. Papanui Toww Hail. Tho Papanui Town Hall, whioh is one of the most complete buildings of its kind in the colony, is now finished throughout according to tie plans, the work being passed by the architect yesterday. The building forms a very valuable addition to that rising suburb. Sporting. —A match for £lO s-eide took place yesterday evening on the racecourse, between Mr Jones’ bay gelding Eureka, and a ohesnut gelding, the name of whose owner we did not learn. Mr T. Lyford officiated as starter, and Mr Sam 'Powell acted as judge, which office, by the by, was a sinecure, as the cbesnut won as he liked bands down. Tho distance was one mile.

The Libbaey Question. —Tho question of petitioning the Board of Governors of Canterbury College to open the public library and reading-room on Sundays was considered last night by the Sydenham Borough Council, and on the motion of Cr. Hall, was carried by six to three, those in favor being Ors, Langdown, Andrew, Hall, Charters, Pavitt and Day, The dissentients were his Worship the Mayor and 0;B. White and Nicholl. Daexng Bueqlaey.—A daring burglary was committed, late on Saturday night or early on Sunday morning, at the business premises of Messrs Fairbank and. Co., chemists, in the Triangle. It appears that the thief or thieves obtained access from the right-of-way which runs from the Colombo street side of the City Hotel to Cashel street, entrance being obtained by lifting a window, to open which, some sharp instrument must have been used. The cash box and the counter till, which contained together nearly £2O, a quantity of postage and receipt stamps, and several books and memorandums pertaining to the business, were abtracted. At present there is no clue to the identiScation of the thieves The manager, Mr Eton, states that the whole of the missing property was carefully locked up by him at half-past 10 o’clock on Saturday night. Thbatbb Royal. —To-morrow evening Mr Walter Reynolds, in the character of an impresario, will introduce to the playgoers of Christchurch Herr Bandmann, Miss Beaudet, and the members of a very strong dramatic company. Mr Reynolds, during his recent visit to Australia, succeeded in engaging a first class collection of artists, who have appeared in Dunedin in a round of pieces, Sbakesperian principally, with great success, playing in that city to crowded houses for no less than eight weeks. So long a lime has elapsed since we here have had a really good Sbakesperian company, that no doubt playgoers will take the opportunity now afforded them of seeing the works of the immortal bard presented to them in fitting guise. The first performance will be " Hamlet,” in which elsewhere Herr Bandmann has won considerable lame. In order to give effect to the pieces produced during the season. Mr Reynolds has spared no expanse in the matter of wardrobe, &c., and we look forward to the coming season as one likely to give us a dramatic treat of high order. Hacino Stock fob Wanganui. —On Dit and Natator went by the steamer Wakatipu yesterday from Lyttelton, their destination being Wanganui, A eaboa RM. Ooubt. —On Thursday, before J. Aylmer, Eaq., 8.M., Kenneth McKenzie, charged with the larceny of a pair of boots, was sentenced to fourteen days’ hard labor.
Stack Pibh at West Evbetoit.— One night towards the close of last week Mr Bradley had two stacks destroyed by fire, which he believed to have been done maliciously. Ho has asked to have an inquest held, and the matter is now in the hands of the police.
Magistbatb's Coubt, Kaiapoi.—At this Court on Monday, before GK H. Blackwell and J. Horse, Esq«., O. Hayman, for allowing a horse to be at large, was cautioned. A license to slaughter cattle was granted to B. Baseman. Several civil cases were settled out of Court.
Local Ibbubtby.—The manufacture of black and red ink and blacking has been commenced by Messrs Parker and 00., an Invercargill firm.
Cl itt Council. —A special meeting of the City Council wu held in the Chamber last evening, at seven o’clock, for the purpose of confirming certain resolutions of the Council. There were present—His Worship the Mayor, Crs. Vincent, Ayers, Oherrill, Lambert, Bishop, Taylor. The resolution taking over a private street called Stewart street was’ duly confirmed, and the special order sealed. A special meeting _w as then held, according to notice, for passing the building by-laws Nos. 1 and 2. The resolution of the Council making the by-laws in question was confirmed on the motion of Or. Lambert, seconded by Or. Bishop; and other formal business incidental to the passing of the by-laws was transacted, after which the Council adjourned.
