[Br Tbpeobaph.J [Per s.s, Te Anau, at the Bluff.] MELBOURNE, February 22. Morgan’s manifesto has attracted much attention throughout the colonies, being well received at Sydney. The “ Argus ” says the manifesto is one of the signs of the times, which Victoria can only neglect at her peril, and points out the danger to Victorian manufacturers from the Customs’ union of Now South Wales and South Australia. At tho present time the Peninsular and the Orient steamers leave Melbourne on tho same dates, and it is stated that the Victorian Government aro communicating with tho latter with tho object of arranging the departures on alternate weeks with the Peninsular boats, thus securing a weekly service. An individual styling himself Count Fitzgerald de Beaumont, who is said to have been received at Government House, has been arrested on the charge of larceny as bailee of three gold watches. It is stated that the Private Secretary, suspecting the genuineness of his assertions, communicated with the detective office. Beaumont also passed several valueless cheques. Experiments are being made with the heriograph between tho dome of the Exhibition and Mount Macedon, a distance of thirty miles. Bannerman, Massie, Garrett, Evans, Midwinter, Cooper, Horan, McShane, and Elliott.
Evans, the Land Office defaulter, has been sentenced to two years for embezzling Government money.
ADELAIDE, February 23. Mr King, the Minister for Education, has resigned, owing to bis projected departure for Europe. His successor is not appointed. The Commissioners of the Melbourne Exhibition have received numerous promises of support for the proposed exhibition at Adelaide, especially of British exhibitors. It is not yet known whether the Government approve the proposal or not. BRISBANE, February 22. Watson’s trans - continental party have reached Arutnac. Tho proposal is renewed to introduce tramways into Brisbane. i |A plague of rats visited the far west of Queensland, attacking lambs, from whioh death resulted.
