DUNEDIN ANNUAL RACES.

[PBESS ASSOCIATION TRinQBAM.] DUNEDIN, February 24. The weather was fine for the races to-day, and the oourie was well attended. At 10.5 a.m. Bandwick was scratched for the Oup. A notice had been posted by Tattersall's that the betting dispute between Drake and Goodison had been settled. Handicap Bubdlk Eacb, of 80 sovs. Two miles and a distance. Mr T. lOitOlb ••• 0 Mr Hungerford's g h Carrigheen, aged, Bat 91b . - ° Betting 2 to 1 against the Agent and Clarence, 4 to 1 Little John, 6 to 1 any other. At the second attempt the lot were sent away together. Milo led over the first hurdle, with Sailor Boy and Carrigheen close up, Clarence and Little John lying next, with the Agent bringing up the rear. This order was kept for a mile, all jumping w«-11. Passing the stand the second time, Milo had been joined by Sailor Boy and Carrigheen, and the throe took the jump together. The Agent and Little John followed abreaßt, three lengths behind, while Clarence had fallen back last. Going round to the back, Carrigheen hung out signals of distress, and left Sailor Boy and Milo fighting for tho lead, which each alternately held till turning into the straight. Here Agent camo up fast, and passed the pair, and all seamed ov«r, for Milo fell back and the whip was pulled out to Sailor Boy. The weight, however, began to tell on Agent, and Sailor Boy, sticking to his work unflinchingly, came up under the whip, and, wearing Agent gradually down, won a fine race by a clear length. Milo was a poor third, Clarence fourth, the rest pulling up. Time—4min. 34$sec. The winner upset a great pot on the favorite. In the two totalisators in the saddling paddock there were 393 tickets taken, of whioh thirteen were on Sailor Boy. Champagne Stakes, for two-year-olds; a sweepstake of 10 sovs each, with ISO added. Dodson's Cassivelaunus filly out of Miss King, 2 yrs 0 The Hon. B. Campbell declared to win with Idalium.

Betting—2 to 1 agst Idalium, 3 to 1 Amulet, 5 to 1 Somnus, 7 to 1 any other. Mr Davidson, who acted as starter for this race on account of Mr Dodson having two horses in the race, dropped the flag to a very bad start, Bix competitors being in a straggling line at the time. Tho Envy filly was in the van, and of course, got all the best of the start. Somnus lay next, behind him coming the Miss King colt, and Mameluke, a length ahead of Amulet, with Idalium absolute last. The leader made the pace a cracker, and quickly drew a couple of lengths away, but at the half distance Somnus had got up to her, and the pair raced away side by side. Idalium gradually got into third place, but several lengths behind the leaders, while Amulet, Mameluke, ond Miss King colt were steadily falling back. Turning into the straight the Envy filly and Somnus were still abreast, with nothing near them, but though the former made a good struggle for it, she could never foot it with her more powerful opponent, who won comfortably by a length. Time, lmin 20Jiec Dunedin Cup of 500 sovs, added to a sweep of 10 sovs each. Second horse to receive 50 fovb, and the third 20 sovs from the stakes. Two miles and a distance. Hon. K. Fishhook, aged, 9st; Volunteer, 4 yrs, "at 121 b; Lady Emma, 3 yrs, 6st 121 b; Sylvanus, 3 yrs, 6st 91b ; also ran. Betting—Even on Sir Modred ; 5 to 2 agst On Dit, 5 to 1 agst Sylvanus, 7 to 1 Volunteer, 10 to 1 Fishhook, 100 to 8 The Governor, 100 to 6 Lady Emma. There was a vexatious lot of fiddling at the post, mainly owing to the vagaries of The Governor and Sir Modred. Volunteer, who had the position next the rails, On Dit, and Fishhook stood very quiet, but the rest proved a little troublesome The flag at last fell to an excellent start, but Lady Emma was the quickest on her feet, and, darting across the oourse, took the inside place, and led past the stand. A length behind her came Oi Dit, with Sylvanus and The Governor close up, Sir Modred fifth, Fishhook next, and Volunteer last. As they went away round to the far side the whole field spread out in single file, with a clear gap between eaob, but in the positions above noted. Coming to tho stand for the second time the Zetland spots were still in the van, On Dit and Sylvanus in their same order, Governor and Sir Modred side by side, close up, Fishhook still sixth, and Volunteer tailing off. At a mile and a half On Dit was let out, and rapidly overhauled Lady Emma, the pair then being five or six lengths in front of the Governor. Almost immediately Harris called on Sir Modred, and the favorite camo like a flash of lightning, and passing the Governor as if he were standing still, got on terms with Lady Emma and On Dit before reaching the straight. It was then soon all over, for the whip was pulled out to the mare, while Sir Modred was untouched, and the latter easily shaking off all On Dit's efforts to get up, won a most interesting race by threequarters of a length. Sylvanus, who had emulated Sir Modred's example of passing the Governor, was just beaten on the post for third place. Lady Emma was fifth, Fishhook limped in sixth, and Volunteer, who was pulled up at the distance post, walked in with the crowd. Time, 4min. 2seo. Sir Modred's victory was the most popular ever seen in the Dunedin Cup, tho ohoering for horse and owner being tremendous. This is the first time that the Dunedin Cup has been won by an Otago owner, and the enthusiasm, therefore, was immense. ■WINNERS OF THE DUNEDIN CUP.

Selling Back of 40 sovs—l| miles. Huntingdon, Sir William, and Little Fraud ran a dead heat, the other starters being Boughleen Dhoun, Playboy, Fenian, and Swede. Betting—2 to 1 agst Huntingdon, 3to 1 Playboy, 6 to 1 Boughleen Dhoun, 7 to 1 any other. This proved a magnificent race. After a straggling start, Little Fraud and Sir William forced the running, and led for nearly all tho distance, Boughleen Dhoun following them olosely, tho favorite lying a good way back. After a mile had been covered, Huntingdon commenced to go up, but Little Fraud and Sir William kept pegging away, and a slashing struggle up the straight resulted in Huntingdon getting level with them only in the lßst stride, the judge's verdict being a dead heat of three. Time—2min 53sec. A good race was run off between the three, and Huntingdon won by a couple of lengths, with Little Fraud second. Publicans' Handicap of 80 sovs. One mile and a quarter. Mr H.
