The Australians arrived at the cricket ground at 11.40, and were greeted with cheers, Mumford, captain of the Auckland team, lost the toss, and the Australians went in at 12.15. Lynch started bowling, Alexander and Spofforth doing battle for the visitors. Alexander, made a brace, but was clean bowled next ball amidst cheers from the crowd—2—l —2. Murdoch filled the vacancy, and Lankham commenced bowling. During the next few overs each batsman added to his score, Murdoch, however, giving a chance at leg, which was not taken. Shortly after Murdoch was stumped by Lankham, senior—ls—2—lo. McDonnell was the next man, and runs came slowly until one from Lynch found its way into McDonnell’s wickets—24—3—3. On resuming, Buokland took Lynch’s place, and the fall of Spofforth’s wicket was the result—64-4-30. Groubo came next. Both batsmen now scored freely, and several changes in the bowling were made. Ultimately a shooter from Robinson disposed of Groube—93—s—l2. Jarvisjretired before the same bowler without scoring.
