FIRES.

A four-roomed cottage at Biocarton, occupied by a person named Hand, was burnt under rather peculiar circumstances early yesterday morning, or rather between Thursday and Friday, At about nine o’clock on the former day, Mr Hand being from borne at the time, Mrs Hand left the house for some purpose, and after an absence of a few minutes returned to find a fire in the firewood box near the kitchen stove. She extinguished the fire, and having seen all safe went out again on some business. Mrs Hand had not been long away when an alarm was raised, hearing which, and being nervous on account of the before-mentioned incident, she went home again, and discovered that the roof of her house had caught fire. The neighbors rendered prompt assistance, all the furniture being rescued, and the application of a quantity of water, carried in buckets, eventually put out the fire; at any rate, to all appearances. The family went to bed in an outhouse at 10 o'clock, the cottage being without furniture and quite wet, owing to the water thrown on the roof, which was partially destroyed. At 3 o’clock in the morning Mr Wright, of Malvern, was passing by on horseback, when he noticed the reflection of fire through the windows of Hand’s cottage, and he at once gave an alarm by which Mrs Hand was roused. By this time the fire (which it would seem, had not been totally extinguished) had got a firm hold of the building, and in a short space of time it was burnt to the ground. The house was insured for JEISO by a Mr Feathers, who had a mortgage on it for .£IOO, and the furniture was insured by Mr Hand for £SO.
