SALMON IN THE OPIHI.
A few days ago, says the “Timaru Herald,” when some of the family of Mr Gould, who resides not far from the eastern entrance of the Opihi gorge, were watching the river close to the homestead, they distinctly saw six biggish fish together in a shoal, making np stream. They wore ascending a rapid, and after getting out of the rough water they glid d into a deep pool as into a resting place on their journey. The description of the fish as given exactly tallies with the known habits of salmon, and we do not think that those seen were any other fish. Tront do not travel in shoals, and unless tho Opihi trout have departed from the habits of their race, the fish travelling towards the Opihi gorge certainly were not trout. Again, if corroborative evidence were wanting, it may be mentioned that jnst this time of year salmon would be making for the head waters of river*. ITor a long time past there have been reports of big fish having been seen in the Opihi and its tributaries, but the disputed point was whether these were salmon. The question is, we fancy, pretty well decided now, hot we trust soon to receive absolutely sura evidence that the salmon fry turned cut in tho Opihi river some few years ago were not turned out in vain.
