OPAWA DISTRICT SCHOOL.
The usual annual treat was given on Saturday, February 15t,h, to the children attending this school, when the prizes for last year wore also presented. Early in the afternoon tho children assembled in a paddock near tho school, where races, &0., were held. Afterwards about 170 children sat down to tea in tho school-room, the prises being subsequently presented by the Rev. G. J. Oholmondeley, who had kindly undertaken
the duty by invitation of the committee. That gentleman delivered a well considered address, in which he exhorted the children to bo diligent in their studios, attentive to their teachers, and to take the fullest advantage of their opportunities. He also addressed a few words to the parents, in which he urged them to send their children to school with greater regularity than they had hitherto done. The
following is the prize list: —b’tep by step class—lst, Agnes Gould ; 2nd, Percy Adams. Primer class—lst, Peter Grenfell; 2nd, Joseph Graham. Standard I.—lst, Robert Currie ; 2nd, George Harper, Standard II Ist, Alexander Jack, Sarah Prosser (equal) ; 2nd, Harriet Frier. Standard lll.—lst Alfred Duncan, Annie Cooper (equal) ; 2nd, Alice Cooper. Standard IV. —lit, John Young ; 2nd, Frank Withers, Standard V.— Ist, Lawrence Cane ; 2nd, Thomas Rioardan Special—Arithmetic, Laurence Cane ; sewing, lit, Mary Currie ; 2nd, Annie Cooper (mistress’ prize ; mapping and drawing, Lawrence Cane; progress, Charles Malcolm ; vocal music (chairman's prize), J. Selby Howell ; attendance, J. Selby Howell, William Austin,
George Compton, George Neighbours (equal); good conduct (boys) : Ist, Frank Adams ; 2nd, Arthur Stanley (master’s prize) ; girls, Alice Samuels. Monthly examinations —Thomas Rioardon. Punctuality, Good conduct and home work (combined) — tho highest prize awarded W. Austin. Firstclass good attendance certificates for children having attended every time the school had been open—J. Selby Howell, W, Austin, George Compton, and George Neighbours. Second-class good attendance certificates, for children who had not been absent more than five times—Charles Howell, Alfred Joblin, and W. Currie. Mr Oholmondeley afterwards distributed prizes (purchased out of funds belonging to the Sc, Mark’s, Opawa, Sunday school) to children attending the religious instruction dosses conducted by him every Friday in the district school. Austin. Class IY.—lst, Sarah Prosser ; 2nd, Matilda Wallace. Allusion was made by tho chairman and the Rev. G. J. Oholmondeley to the good work done by the master, Mr Morgan, during the short term of his office, with expressions of regret at his intended departure to another sphere of labour. It should be stated that the necessary funds to provide the treat and prizes were subscribed by the householders, all except two liberal donations of £2 2s each by Mr Souter, the former head-teacher, and Mrs Souter, which had been expended chiefly in the purchase of the special prizes. Hearty thanks having been given by acclamation of the children to the subscribers, Mr Oholmondeley and Mr Morgan, the children were dismissed to their homes.
