OTAGO BAR.
Tho bar at the entrance to Otago Harbor is a source of great anxiety to the members of the Harbor Board. At Thursday’s meeting, says the “Herald,” Captain Thomson’s report stated that the Botomahona had crossed while drawing I6ft of water and had not touched. This statement led Mr Matheson to comment upon the frequent reference to the state of the bar, and he said he did not see why the fact of a vessel not having struck should bo reported as if it was something to bo jubilant about. The chairmen mentioned that accurate information ef the state of the bar was necessary, as untrue reports wore sometimes published in respect to it. Captain Logan said that many vessels struck and were not reported to have done so ; and Mr Pish, cn the contrary, said that vessels were said to have struck which had not, and instanced tho Botomahana for one. He agreed with Mr Matheson that this constant reference to the bar was undesirable, and having made that statement, ho was twitted by one member of the Board with having recently, on bis way to Melbourne, sent a telegram from tho Bluff to the effect that the steamer in which he had taken passage bad crossed the bar without striking.
