An information has been laid by the superintendent of the Asylum against throe of thefemale attendants for striking and ill-treating' a female patient. WESTPORT,. February 14. Disaster to SteamerTho Charles Edward, steamer, in coming from Greymouth, struck a sunken rock off the Steeples, and knocked s hole in her bottom. She steamed ahead while the water rose in the engine room, and then anchored.. There was an impenetrable fog at the time. As soon as the accident happened guns were fired; and these were heard in Westport,, but nothing practical was done. The Grafton,, from Greymouth, was seen by the Charlie* and great endeavors were made to attract her attention, but without avail. Information reached Westport of the accident, and theGrafton proceeded to her assistance, and after standing by her all night, towed the disabled vessel to Westport, arriving at nine o'clock this morning. Mr Fox, late Inspector of Police, was presented with a purse of sovereigns and a testimonial to-day by the Mayor and influential citizens. Harbor Board Election. Thera is great excitement over the Harbor Board elections. Six candidates for seats representing tbe town. Bey- Mr Spurgeon. The Hey. Mr Spurgeon preached twice to immense congregations. His style as a preacher is conversational, and free from rant or twang. New ConventBishop Moran, of the Catholic- Church, announced the erection of a convent to be commenced shortly. AUCKLAND, February 13. Fire. A fire broke out in Messrs J„ W. Carr and Son’s premises. Custom House street West* : last night. The top storey was used by Mr ■ Carr for boat-building, and the lowerstorey was leased as a blacksmith's shop to Messrs Clever and Bennett. The premises wore destroyed. Carr’s loss is €2OO, uninsured. Clever and Bennett lose all their tools and stock-in-trade, and are also uninsured. WELLINGTON, February,l3. Gold Discovery. While a party of prospectors re-ire out proseeting the Terawhiti district, they came* upon an outcrop of what appears to be an. extensive reef of quartz. Dr. Hector visited, the spot, and a few specimens weue brought to town. He estimates that the stone will turn out 3£ozs. to the ton. CommissariatThe committee of the New Zealand Side Association have completed arrangements with Mr H. Bennett, of the Commercial Hotel, for catering at the forthcoming meeting. - GREYMOUTH. February 13. A Full Harbour. On Saturday there were fifteen vessels at the wharf loading coal, including the- Prosperity and Mary Campbell, for Melbourne. INVERCARGILL, February 12. Farmers' AssociationA largely attended meeting of representative farmer* of the Southland district was held in Sloan’a Hall to-day to inaugurate a Farmer*’ Co-operative Association for the disposal of farm produce. A provisional directory was nominated and a secretary appointed. The enterprise may be said to hav* been fairly started.
