ROAD BOARDS.

WAIPARA. The monthly meeting of the Waipara Hoad Board took place on February 7th. Present— Messrs J. D, Lance (chairman), J. Sanderson, W. Parkerson, W. B. Piper. The surveyor’s report was read. The Chairman stated that last week he had the surveyor with him, and went to look at Bull and Wright’s work, when he found the man to whom they had sublet part of their work was putting in the shingle abort measure. He also went to Hoban last week, and found they are short in their measure. He thought he would name it to the Board. The Board stated that they were much obliged to him, and told the surveyor not to pass any work without the stipulated quantity in specification was put on. The clerk was instructed to write to the Howai Hoad Board,

stating that the road to south branch of the Waipara was now completed, asking the Eowai Board to have the last piece of road on their side of the river formed to meet it. A letter from F. B. Davies, Stonyhurst, stating that he wished the Board would metal his road and also contribute towards the expense of the cutting from the corner of his present road to the Omihi road. The chairman said he would write to him, and state that they would give him £26 toward the cutting, but the metalling at present they could not promise him. The surveyor said that the long cutting running out of the Greta wanted building up at the bottom, which he was instructed to get done. A petition was then read to the Board, signed by almost every inhabitant in the district, saying they were fully satisfied with the gates in the neighborhood, and trusted the Board would not order them to be removed. That on the north side of the Hurunui they were allowed by the Government, and hoped the Board would take means to have them legalised on this side. A letter from H. D. Macpherson, asking the Board it they had work wanting superintendence he should be glad to give his time. The Board told him when he came in that the principal part of their work was completed, an ! at the present time they did not want anyone. A letter from A. Cane, saying that he objected to the accounts of the Board. The chairman stated that he had written to him, telling him that he would let him know the day the auditor was coming. A let’er from Messrs Ford and Ogdon, asking the Board, in their orders for pipes, if they would think of them, as they were making en exceedingly good sample of pipes. A depution, headed by Mr Fox, came in to the Board, asking it to form a road to his land, saying that he had no outlet, as there wanted some cuttings to be made. The chairman said that he would look at it this week. Mr Rollesfcon came to the Board, asking it to obtain the land required for his road to the Waikari Valley road. The Chairman said he would see to it. Mr Olson came to the Board, requesting it to take the water off the road near his land on Waikari Valley road. The Chairman said ho would see to it. Mr Greenwood saw the Board, saying that Board had promised him £SOO, now he had £2OO laid out on it, and would the Board lay out the other £3OO. He was told they would, but it would be the winter before it could be done. The Chairman said that the school and house were now erected on Mason’s Fiat, and there were two or three pieces of road, short ones, that wanted forming. The Board asked him to get it done, as it was really necessary. Accounts amounting to £1867 13s 6i were passed for payment, and the Board adjourned.

LITTLE RIVER. The Board held their monthly meeting on tho 7f'h inat. Present—All the members. The following business was transacted :—The condition of tho road by tho Ahuriri S iddle having been reported by the clerk, it was resolved that said road ba closed for wheel traffic till further notice, and that advertisement to that effsot be inserted in the public press. Some stone rubble has been ordered on the new cross road by Manson’s and at the bridge in same locality. Also, that tenders be invited for supplying tho Board with 6000 feet of heart of black pine or totara timber, 18 x 8 x 3, to be delivered os follows :—2OOO feet at the Road Board office, 2000 feet at Mr McCartney's, Tai Tapu, and tho remainder anywhere ordered within a radius of four miles of tho township of Little River. Some repairs to culverts, &o , calling or immediate attention. The clerk hao besn instructed to have them done as soon as possible. Resolved that Hawkins Bros, be instructed to nap all the stone they hare now

unearthed at Manson’s paddock. Also, that John Archer etart at once metal carting in Gebbie’s Valley, in pursuance of his contract. Also, that all cattle, &c., found on the public 1 roads in the district be impounded. That the ranger be informed that he is not to interfere with any cattle on the roads through pastoral runs, as this part of his district is entirely of that description, and that' the Board will not bo responsible for any illegal act of his in regard to exceeding his duty or otherwise. With regard to Mr Coop’s bill for timber, delivered to a contractor, it was resolved “ That the chairman see what portion of said timber has been used on extra work on culverts at Tai Tapu, and pay accordingly.” In regard to the boundary line suggested by Selwyu to Akaroa County Councils, it was agreed that, having received several petitions and other correspondence on Ihifl' subject, and a deputation from this Board having met a deputation from the Halswell Board, end fixed upon the boundary described by the Selwyn County Council, but never heard the question of water raised before, this Board considers that they have already done all that is necessary to attain the desirable object of fixing a clearly defined boundary, and that it now rests with above Councils to i eall meetings of the ratepayers if they think such to be necessary. It was resolved “ That all rates not paid in by the end of this month bo sued for.” Also, “That the clerk prepare specification for the continuation of about eighty chains, more or less, of Western Valley road, which chit fly consists in bush clearing.” The matter of cleaning Tai Tapu drains was referred to next meeting of the Board, Some bills having been disposed of, the Board rose.

OXFORD.

The adjourned meeting of the above Board was held on Saturday, sth instant, at 2 p.m. Present—Messrs Wilson Fisher (chairman), Bennett, Ingram and Marsh. The clerk’s report was road and considered. The clerk was instructed to have a notice board erected on the east end of Sale’s road where the water had been tampered with, and have the places made good. To put a new deck on Gamman’s bridge of four inch planks. To take the necessary steps about proclaiming the footpaths. The cost of building a retaining wall and filling at Mr David Fisher’s being large, it was decided to allow the work to stand over until the place had been visited by the Board. To call for tenders for log culverts on Sladden and Grimwood’s roads. To report as to the best places for stacking stones for breaking for repairs for the winter on the various roads. To see the parties interested about water on road above Mr Marsh’s, and obtain a definite offer from each. To call for tenders ’ for fords on Harman’s Gorge road. Also, that it Mr Dailey did not make satisfactory progress with his contract on Wharfdale road the Board would cancel his contract. To call for tenders for ford at end of Oarleton road, and report upon the culvert in the Oarleton district. The following correspondence was read: —Prom Messrs S. and J. Mcßuar, about storm water at the junction of R-.imey’s, Woodstock and Ashworth roads. The matter to stand over till after harvest. From Mr Gresson re purchase of land, &o. From Mr Lewthwaite about compensation for land on Wharfdale road. Prom Mr W. Eager, asking for some allowance for stones carted on Bay road. The Board decided not to make any allowance. The following persons waited upon the Board:—Mr Petrie, asking to have the formation of Sladden’a road extended about ten chains. Tenders to be called for the work. Mr Orallan, asking to have Wharfdale road formation continued about ten chains further than at present. The clerk to visit the place and call for tenders for as much as is required. Mr Sedoole, asking Board to clear the gorse from the footpath near bis residence. As the gorge seed had been carted out of the gravel pit when the footpath was formed, the Board decided to have the work done. To call for tenders for painting footbridges at Oamman’s Creek and Forbes's, &o. Mr Petrie, about a nuisance which had'been committed by carting manure from slaughter-yards through the township. The Board resolved to give the clerk instructions about nuisances when the matter had been fully considered. The clerk was instructed to report upon the road between Messrs Stubbs a’-'d Mebrten’s, running from McJarrow’s to the main road. Tenders were opened for bridge in Bay road and one accepted for a stone bridge. Accounts to the amount of £474 13s 23 were passed for payment, and the Board adjourned till Friday, February 18th, at 2 p.m.

MOUNT SOMERS. The usual monthly meeting of this Board was held at the Road Board office, Mount Somers, on Monday, February 7th, 1881. Members present Messrs A. B. Paoke (chairman). J. B. Taylor, and Jno. Hood. The surveyor’s report was read and considered. The following correspondence w»s read :—Prom Mr W. O, Walker, relative to the purchase of materials, &o. From Messrs Branson and Parnell, re a claim made by A. Prenty for work done on Black Hill Track, and other matters. The chairman stated that he had directed the clerk to reply previous to the meeting, which was approved. From the chairman Ashburton County Council, re accounts for balance due to Council on Ashburton bridges. From the District Land Registrar, acknowledging receipt of Board’s letter re transfer of Cameron’s road, Methven. From Mr Arthur Ede, requesting permission to take a small stream from Fergus’ creek to his house. The surveyor to examine the proposed race, and to use his discretion as to whether adjacent landowners will sustain any injury by Mr Ede’s request being granted ; if he report favorably, Mr Ede’s request to bo granted, provided he make satisfactory provision for crossing Tramway Reserves road. From the Railway Department, Wellington, enclosing list of amended grain tariff as reduced. From the Returning Officer re advertising elections. Prom the same, informing the Board that Messrs Hood and T. Tisch have been nominated to fill the extraordinary vacancy in No. 4 Ward ; but that Mr Tisch having retired, Mr Hood was duly elected. From the Ashburton County Council, enclosing a copy of a resolution passed at a meeting held on January 11th re separation of district, and stating that the question hod been referred to a committee, consisting of four members of the Council, to report on. From Mr J. Ollivier, provincial district auditor, certifying as to the accurate and careful manner in which the accounts had been kept during the past year. From the Colonial Secretary re separation of the district. Mr Wm. Fergus interviewed the Board relative to the acceptance of the tender for Valetta road. It was resolved—- “ That in the future the tender box be closed punctually at the time mentioned in advertisement.” The Board resolved—“ That no orders given by contractors will be entertained for the future.” Mr J. B. Taylor asked why Messrs Day Bros, had received the carting of drain pipes from Metbven to Mount Somers. The surveyor stated that he had agreed with Mr Fergus to cart the pipes, but that as Fergus had been somewhat dilatory he had informed him that if Day Bros, were prepared to cart them before he was, that they should do so, the price charged by Day Bros, being considerably less than that of Fergus. It was decided to grant the surveyor leave of absence for a fortnight during harvest operations. The pay-sheet, amounting to £320 9s 2d, having been passed far payment, the Board adjourned.
