The Australians having arrived at one o'clock, appointed to commence play at two, but at that time rain commenced falling, though the shower «oon passed over, and the weather was then perfection. The Victory Square Ground was in splendid order. Firth captained for Neleon, and Murdoch losing the toss, Fowler and Pagen represented Nelson, the former taking the first ball from Spofforth.. The first over was a maiden. Off Palmer's next over Fagen got the ball away for two. A maiden, relieved by leather hunting, followed. After playing together for onehour, the partnership was broken, Fagen being oaught by Boyle off Spofforth, 1—8—37. The next man was H. Boddington, who retired before a trimmer from Spofforth—2—o - 37. Halliday filled the vacancy and made a few capital drives. Maiden then followed maiden till Fowler waa clean bowled by Boyle—3—3o—sl. Firth took the vacancy, but added only a single when he also succumbed to Boyle. Lawry was eaught by McDonnell—s—o—s6—and L. Balmain was caught by Boyle—6—o—69. Halliday was next to retire, being caught by Spofforth off Boyle, having put together 14> by good bold play—7—l4—62. G. Fowler retired before a bailer from Spofforth—--8—3—62. T. Eden having soored one or two singles in the meantime, Burns was caught by Groubo off Boyle—-19— 6—78. Bolton then joined Eden, and opened with a skier for 3, following it up with a hit for 2, but his third drive to long-on was accepted by Groube, and he retreated—2o— Hale waa the last man in, but on his first ball he was given out leg before. W. Eden carried his bat out for 2, and the total innings closed for 83. The bowling was very effective Boyle was exceedingly difficult to master, his balls being sent in with tremendous break, and after he replaced Palmer it will be seen that very little was done. The innings closed at a quarter to six, and an adjournment was then made till eleven tomorrow.

February 10. The Australians went in at eleven o'clock. Barns and G. Fowler bowling. Spofforth was run out for 3—l—3—7. Murdook waa clean bowled by Burns —26—14. McDonnell bowled by Burna 3—5—22.
