LYTTELTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of this Council was held on Monday night, when there were present the Mayor and Ors. Macpherson, Macdonald, Hawkins, Reed, Grubb,Webb, andWeyburne. The receipts since the preceding meeting wore £712 Is lOd. A letter from an assistant engineer of railway! waa read, requesting the

sanction of the Council to lay in an inch pipe to the station-master’s house at the Heathcote Yal'ey from the Lyttelton water mains. It was resolved to allow the station-master a supply upon the same terms as other consumers there are supplied. Mr Edward Lee, of Messrs Oarforth and Lee, wrote that he had his section of land surveyed, the result being that his fence would encroach upon the Tioehurst road quite two feet. He was prepared to keep his boundary fence in line with the road as now formed upon the understanding that he should receivo in exchange a piece of land in the lower side of his section fronting Jackson road. Tioehurst road is on 3 of what are known as Mr private roads. The Mayor stated, with reference to these encroachments, that Captain MoLellan’s fence undoubtedly encroached upon Tioehurst road. The exchange of land, as asked for by Mr Lee, was left with the works committee and Or. Reed to arrange. Messrs Oarforth and Lee applied for a renewal of their slaughterhouse license to December 31st, 1881. Ors. Macpherson and Reed gave an excellent character of the place from personal observation, they having visited it and found it free from offensiveness and in every way satisfactory. The inspector of nuisances corroborated their report, and the license was renewed as applied for. Accounts amounting to £176 18s 9d were passed. Two tenders received for leasing 1200 acres of the Borough’s reserves, situated at the Rakaia, were opened. One was from Mr Passmore, offering to take the property for the first year free, then for six years at the rate of 2s 6d per acre, for the following seven years at 2s lOd, and for the succeeding seven years 3s 4d per acre, Mr Saunders’ tender was lower, and Mr Passmore’s was therefore accepted. The gorse nuisance was discussed by the Council at length, after which the adjournment took place.
