BOARD OF REVIEWERS.
Messrs T. H. Potts, A. O. Knight, ard W. B. Tosswill eat at Lyttelton on Saturday, February stb, as the Board of Reviewers to bear objections to assessments made under the Property Assessment Act. Mr E. O. Latter was present on behalf of the Government. There were eight objectors from the Lyttelton Borough, but only two appearances. In one of those the objection was sustained, and in the other the assessment was slightly reduced. Two special objectors, the Lyttelton Building Society and the Lyttelton Gas do., stood over until the objections from Port Victoria district and Port Levy district had been disposed of. Erom the former district one objector appeared, but failed to establish his claim for exemption, and the assessment was confirmed. There were five objectors in the Port Levy district who had demurred to the valuations there, but none of them were in attendance while the Board held its sitting. The valuation made in the case of the Lyttelton Permanent Land, Building, and Investment Society was reduced by £6450, representing the value of the permanent shares. Mr H. N. Nalder, for the society, produced evidence to show that the permanent shareholders were neither directly nor indirectly entitled to any profits on the transactions of the society, as is the case in the majority of building societies. The valuation of the Lyttelton Gas, Coal, and Coke Company was reduced by £3400. Mr Izard appeared as counsel representing the Government.
