The New Zealand Timber Company, which holds a large estate there, advertise it open for mining on most liberal terms. Shipping. Arrived—Arawata. WELLINGTON, February 7. Supposed IncendiarismThe police received a telegram last night, stating that the stabling at the Marquis of Normanby Hotel, at Carterton, was destroyed by fire on Saturday night, and that an attempt bad been made to fire the hotel. Later. The stable and coachhouse destroyed at Carterton was insured for £3OO. One house was burnt, and the hotel and public hall were saved with difficulty. The Fire Inquest. The inquest on the fatal fire at Newtown, revealed nothing. A verdict “Accidentally burned,” with a rider calling on the corporation to erect the fire-bell which has been laying on the ground near the station for many months. The ElevenThe cricket match was resumed at 12 45. Spofforth and Slight at the wiokets, White in the field instead of Blackburn, who met with an accident last night, injuring his foot. When the score stood at 79, Spofforth cut Armitage to mid-on, where he was held. Jarvis followed. Score at 130 was—Spofforth, 32, caught; Slight, not out, 39 ; Jarvis, not out, 11. Total for four wickets, 98 runs. NELSON, February 7. Rich Stone. Several lease applications having been granted in the Warden’s Court, Collingwood, for claims at Mount Arthur reefs, these will be thoroughly tested and work pressed on. Dr. Hector reports on the stone from these reefs, which gives over fourteen ounces to the ton. NEW PLYMOUTH, February 7. High Jinks. To-day ie observed ae a general holiday in consequence of the laying the first stone of the harbor works. The town is decorated with flags, and a procession will he formed at noon. The stone will be laid by Mr F. A. Carrington at 3 p.m. There will be sporta, boatracing, and fireworks in the evening. The weather ie exquisite. DUNEDIN, February 7. Drowning. J. F. Jones, the licensee of the Grand Pacific Hotel, was drowned whilst bathing in the surf at the Ocean beach this morning. Later. Jones is supposed to have committed suicide in consequence of monetary diffi* culties. Bailiffs have been in tbe bouse since Friday. The body is not yet recovered. Gambling in Public-house-At the City Court, Mr Thomson, of the Baoecourse Hotel, was £5 for permitting the throwing of dice for drinks in a licensed house. AUCKLAND, February 5. The Regatta* The postponed regatta races came off to* day. The amateur outriggers race did not eventuate. Amateurs sculling match—Morpeth, 1 ; Yates, 2. Henderson gave in. The match for £2O between the yachts Jessie Logan and Toy was won by the former by five minutes. Pedestrianism. In the walking match of seven miles, Bret and Fernandez, the former beat by half a mile. Educational. The candidates for the Education Board whose nominations were rejected intend to apply to the Supreme Court for a mandamus to compel the Board to receive their nominations. Rifle Match. A rifle match, eleven aside, between the Victoria and New Zealand Insurance Companies was won by the former by 36 points. HAWEEA, February 5. An AppointmentCaptain Skut has been appointed chief surveyor to the West Coast Land Commission, and will for tbe present be stationed at Hawera. GIBBOBNE, February 6. Native Land CaseThe Native Land Court, presided over by Judges Heal and O’Brien, has refused to vest the freehold of Powawa block in three trustees, instead of in tbe fifty or sixty Native owners who had signed a trust deed to the three trustees. On the application of Mr Bees, a case has been stated for the decision of the Supreme Court, and Mr Bees goes to Wellington to bring it to a speedy issue if possible, as the passengers by the Lady Jocelyn want to settle on the block. WELLINGTON, February 5. Conscience Money. The Colonial Treasurer has received a letter from Hokitika, signed “ Catholic,” enclosing three £1 notes (conscience money), due to the public revenue for some time past. Race Settlement. The settling for the Wellington races takes place on Monday, when the following amounts will be paid :—Hon. W. Robinson, £351 10s ; Mr Walters, £223 5s ; Mr H. Lunn, £llß 15s; Mr Vallanoe, £7l ss; Mr Horsford, £49 10s; Mr Butler, £47 10s ; Mr Olntham, £2B 10s ; Mr Hill, £23 15s; Mr Orosbie, £23 15s ; Mr Redwood, £23 15s ; total, £961 10s. DUNEDIN, February 5. Racing. The following handicap has been declared for the hurdle race : —Agent, 12st; Clarence, list 121 b ; Little John, 10st 91b ; Waikari, lOat ; Milo, 10st ; Artful Joe, Oat 101 b; Sailor Boy, Bat 91b ; Oarrigeen, Sat 91b. Accident. A fatal accident happened at Waikata on Thursday. A daughter of Mr S. Mclntosh, aged fifteen, was thrown from her horse, and her foot being caught in the stirrup, she was dragged a considerable distance. She died an hour after from concussion of the brain. INVEEOABGILL, February 6. Fire. A large two-storey detached wooden building in Tay street, belonging to Mr Lockart, was destroyed by fire on Saturday, the immediate cause of the conflagration being the boiling over of an inflammable composition melting on the fire. The building was occupied by Mr Thomas, a furniture dealer, and Mr Cooper, a jeweller. All interested were insured, the following offices being losers— New Zealand, £4OO, on the building; Victoria, £3OO, on the stock of Thomas, most of which was, however, saved ; Standard and National, £IOO each, on Cooper’s tools and furniture. PedestrianismOn Saturday young Soott concluded the feat of walking 112 miles in twenty-four boars. He put on a capital spurt at the finish, and came in two minutes before the expiration of tbe stipulated time.
