DESTITUTE DOGS.

A meeting of gentlemen interested in the formation of a society for the protection and maintenance of destitute O’t, was held in the Commercial Hotel yesterday evening, at half-past eight o’clock. Mr Jackson read a paper describing the injurious effects of the present arrangement by which many valuable dogs taken in custody by the police were killed as stray dogs, although it frequently happened that the animals so made away with were of considerable value, and greatly prized by their owners, who were probably unaware of their perilous position. The object of the present gathering was to form a society for the protection of such dogs—all stray dogs in fact—and he suggested that an institution such as had been founded by the Baroness Burdott Ooutts, might be established on a minor scale in Christchurch, the cost of which, he thought, would not exceed £SO. Mr Turnbull was voted to the obair. It was resolved —“ That an institution be formed in Christchurch for the safe custody of stray doge,” Mr Jackson proposed that the “ home ”_be established two or three miles from Christchurch, and that a subscription list be at once opened for the collection of the necessary funds to erect buildings. The motion was carried unanimously. A committee of management was then formed and other necessary preliminary steps taken, and the meeting then adiourned.
