THE LATE FIRE BRIGADE CONFERENCE.
Daring the sitting of the recent Conference of Fire Brigades (says the " New Zealand Times”) several matters of extended public interest were discussed and dealt with in a business-like and common-sense manner. The question of inducing the Government to remit the import duty upon made-up uniforms brought up the whole subject of encouraging local industries. A few of the delegates seemed to think that paying the duty was a hardship, hut the majority were of opinion that those who declined to patronise New Zealand cloth and New Zealand tailors should not object to the tax. The president of the Conference sensibly remarked that, if they went to the Government they would be told (as they had been told once before) that a remission of the duty would interfere with the legitimate trade of the colony. He had no doubt that the time was fast approaching when all firemen’s uniforms would come from colonial manufactories, such as the Mosgiel and the Xaiapoi ; and there are few wellwishers to New Zealand who will not concur in the president’s idea.
