AKAROA COUNTY COUNCIL.
An ordinary meeting of the above Council was held at the Council Chambers, Duvauchelle's Bay, on Saturday, 22nd January. Present —Messrs J. Dalglish (chairman), P. B. Barker, W. Coop, J. Gobbie, J. Hay, O. McDonald, P. W. Williams, and the Bev. B. B. Bradley. A letter was read from the Selwyn County Council, asking the Council if they would agree to the alteration of the boundary as follows : from th 9 corner of section No. 13536 it should follow the southern boundary of sections Nos. 794, 857, and 944, thence along the centre of the road and drain reserve to the Bivor Hals well, as at present tho boundary line is a creek that cannot be properly traced, as it runs into a swamp. A letter was also read from the Little Biver Boad Board on the same subject, and agreeing to the alteration. Mr Gebbie said, that if the boundary line was altered the Halswell Boad Board would most likely direot the creek (the present boundary) to drain tho swamp, which would do some ot the residents there a great deal of harm, as it would cut off their supply of water, and before anything was done in the matter he should first like to hear the opinion of the residents in that part of the district. He would therefore move, " That no alteration of boundary between tho Selwyn and Akaroa counties be agreed to till a public meeting of the residents in the Little Biver Boad District has been held, and that the Selwyn County Council be written to that effect." The motion was seconded by Mr Bradley, and carried. The following letters were read : Prom Mr W. Montgomery, M.H.8., stating that last session the lower portion of the boundary line botwecn the Selwyn and Akaroa counties had been altered from the bank to the centre of the river Halswell, though he had pointed out that by doing so it was doing the Akaroa county a great injustice, as they would_ have to keep their portion clear of weeds, without deriving any benefit from it. It was proposed by Mr Bradley, seconded by Mr Gebbie, and carried—" That Mr Montgomery be thanked for his attention re tho alteration of boundary between tho Salwyn and Akaroa counties." Prom the Wairoa County Council, asking tho Council's co-oporation re tbe following resolution :—" That it is desirable that counties should be placed on the same footing as municipalities as regards landed endowments." On the motion of Mr Williams, it was resolved—" That this Council join with the Wairoa and other Councils to urge Government to plaoe counties on the same footing as municipalities in regard to landed endowments." A resolution from the same Counoil was read, asking the Council's co-opcru-
tion to try and get the Waste Lands Board amended so as to provide for an elective element being' represented thereon, as well as a nominated one. It was resolved—“ That as the land is almost entirely sold in this county that it would be of no benefit to this Council to move in the matter.” From the Ashburton County} Council, enclosing Jcopy of correspondence that had passed between that Council and the General Manager of the New Zealand Railways re the increased tariff on the Canterbury railways. From the Wallace County Council, asking the Council’s co-opsration in protesting against the stoppage by Government of the 20 par J cent, of the land fund, hitherto granted to counties. The letter was ordered to be acknowledged. From the Colonial Secretary, requesting a formal recommendation from the Council re the alteration of the boundary lino between the Pigeon Bay and Port Levy Road Districts. The clerk was instructed to forward the necessary recommendation. Letter and telegram wore read from Messrs Harper and Co., solicitors to the Council, forwarding their opinion as to what steps the Council should take re the Balguorie road. After discussion, it was proposed by Mr Bradley, seconded by Mr Gsbbie, and carried —“ That the chairman be authorised to take the necessary stops to have the diversion of the Balguorio road through Mr Armstrong's property proceeded with under the Public Works Act, 18S0.” On the motion of Mr Williams, seconded by Mr Bradley, it was resolved to write to the Okain’s Bay Road Board, pointing out the unsatisfactory state of the Le Bon’s Bay pound, and asking them to put it in a sufficient state of repair.
