THE AUSTRALIANS IN NEW ZEALAND.

SECONJD EDITION

THE ELEVEN v OTAGO. [By Tbebgbaph.l DUNEDIN, January 20. The match between the Otago Twenty-two and the Australian Eleven commenced on the CUedonian ground this afternoon. The weather was lovely. Murdoch, winning the toBB, took advantage of the capital wicket prepared. About 4CO persons were present. At _ the outset some difficuly was experienced as to settling the number of runs for the boundary hits. Jarvis and Spofforth first represented the visitors, Oooke bowling from the northern end, and Moore from opposite. When the score stood at ten Spofforth would have lost his wicket to a certainty had Parker returned the ball properly. The runs came very Blowly, the field being so woll placed that it was difficult to get the ball away for more than a single, except for hits to fenoe. After half-an-bour's play, the score only stood at sixteen. McNeil then took the ball from Moore. The change soon proved effective ; Spofforth, who had been troubling the field most, by putting one high up in slips, Paramor taking it. 24—1—12. Murdoch supplied his place, and was received with cheerß from the spectators and field. Dawes supplanted Oook, but the change was not beneficial, Murdoch puttiDg him past the scorers' tent for three, and several singles being got off him. At two o'clock, when the lunch adjournment was made, the soore stood :—Australians—Jarvis, not out, 12 ; Spofforth, o Parimor, b MoNeil, 12 ; Murdoch, not out, 9 j wide 1, no ball 1 ; total, 35.
