THE AUSTRALIANS AT INVERCARGILL,

3 (press association telegram.) 3 INVERCARGILL, January 18. Play was resumed this morning. Slight and - Gronbe. the two not-onts, taking their place at , the wickets. The rain of last night had nnfor- , tunately made the ground exceedingly wet and , disadvantageous, as much felt by the field as by , the men at the wickets. The scoring was very ■ slow, and the game rather monotonous until Slight, after playing well for 17, put one up to ' J. Morrison off Ellis at cover point, and re- ’ tired. Palmer took his place, and batted freely, * though the ball appeared to be well on the wicket, Kingsland and Ellis trundling in capital form. A splendid catch in the slips by Nash dismissed Palmer for 11. Blackfaam next appeared, but was soon caught by Millar. White supplied his place, and after making one hit for 4 was caught, and the innings closed for 200 runs. After a short adjournment the Australians took the field. The play of the Invercargill men, though better than on the previous day, calls for no special comment. Ihey made 74, leaving the Australians victors in one innings with 83 runs to spare. The weather to-day was showery, and this lessened the attendance of the public ; about 600 were present to-day and 1000 yesterday. Appended are the scores : AUSTRALIAN ELEVEN. First Innings.
