SYDENHAM BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The usual fortnightly meeting of this Council was held in the Borough Council Chamber at seven o’clock last evening. Present—His Worship the Mayor and all the Councillors, Mr T. Quill, of Ashburton, wrote, promising to pay his rates when the sanitary condition of Sandyford street was improved. The matter was referred to the sanitary committee, and the town clerk was instructed to apply for the payment of the rates forthwith. Messrs Garrick and Oowlishaw wrote, enclosing draft deed of concession from the Sydenham Borough Council to the Tramway Company. Referred to a committee, consisting of Crs. Hall, Andrew, and White, with power to refer to Messrs Harper and 00., and to report at next meeting of Council. From the Spreydon Road Board, asking that the proposed action re the Council’s claim be deferred till after the new Road Board had met. Agreed to. The works committee reported that the plans and specifications of the proposed alterations on the South Belt had been completed by Messrs Dobson and Son, and if approved by the City Council, they asked that authority bo given to call for tenders. The report was adopted. The sanitary committee reported that the inspector had been instructed to take action against certain persons who had failed to trim thoir gorao fences. The finance committee reported the fortnight’s receipts to be £164 19s 6 J f expenditure, £127 13s Id; credit balance at bank, £1147 6s 9d. On the motion of Or. Holl it was agreed—“ That the sum of £l7 17s be paid the town clerk for extra labor incurred by reason of the meetings of the Drainage Board.” The following resolutions were agreed to :—“ That a letter be sent to the Chief Postmaster, asking if the borough residents are availing themselves of the facilities of the postal, telegraphic and money order arrangements recently introduced into Sydenham.” “ That the Government be written to asking for its favorable consideration to an application for the representation of Sydenham on the Lyttelton Harbor Board.” “ That the managers of the Christchurch banks be written to, requesting them to establish a branch bank for the facility of the ratepayers of Sydenham.” In answer to a question the Mayor said that the footbridge deputation had not yet interviewed the Premier, who had been written to on the matter, but had not yet replied. The Council then adjourned.
