INDIA AND THE EAST.
[By Telegraph.]
[Per s.s. Tararua at the Bluff.] BOMBAY, Dacembor 16,
Tho tour of the Viceroy has had an unfortunate interruption. The day before leaving Bombay his Lordship complained of a sudden chill, and was unable to attend a ball given in his honor the same evening at Government House. Notwithstanding this, he insisted on carrying out his programme of the tour, and left next day for Calcutta. On reaching Allahabad, however, he was so unwell that he was obliged to break tho journey there, where he has since remained. Bulletins of his Lordship’s health are daily issued, and tho latest one states that the fever from whioh he was suffering is abating, and tho general symptoms are most satisfactory. Great anxiety was expressed, both here and in England, for the Viceroy and tho Marchioness of Ripon. The doctor states that the journey to Calcutta could not be renewed under three weeks.
There is no news of a reliable character to report from Afghanistan. Various rumors are extant as to the assassination of the Ameer of Cabul by Ayoub Khan, of Herat. These have been in circulation daring the last fortnight, but remain unconfirmed. Tho latter’s position at Herat is considered critical, as a revolution against him by various tribes led by his father-in-law is considered imminent.
