THE DUCHESS OF EDINBURGH.

The London correspondent of the “New Zealand Herald” writes:—“The Queen is haying her usual six or seven weeks at Balmoral; and, after a brief stay at Marlborough House, the Prince and Princess of Wales leave for Sandringham, where they always hold the home festivals of their own birthdays (the Prince’s on the 12th of this month and the Princess’ on the Ist of December) and Christmas. While in London they visit the theatres freely, and create a distant echo at the c West End * of the summer season. The Emperor of Russia’s uroolaimed marriage with the Dolgoroukie has naturally deeply grieved the Duchess of Edinburgh. Sympathy on this subject seems bringing about a friendship between the Duchess and our Princess of Wales, as the latter has been visiting the Duchess at Eastwell Park. When the Duke of Edinburgh first brought his Russian wife to England, she did not conciliate his sisters and sister-in-law by her insistence that as an Emperor’s daughter she ought to take precedence on state and other occasions of them all. But this could not be, and she had to yield precedence to the Princess of Wales. By-and-by, stories of her ability, good sense, and goodness of heart gradually took the place of those of haughtiness and contempt for the smaller royalties, and latterly the devoted way in which she nursed her mother the Empress, and declined to leave her oven when explosions were the rule whenever the Czar was established, has won for her in England a thorough respect, which no doubt will be shown in English fashion when she begins to make public appearance here again.”
