MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.

CHRISTCHURCH. Fbiday, Janhaky 7. [Before J. E. Parker, H. H. Brins, and B, Howl-ngs, Eaqs., J.P.'e.J Dam.’EENNEsa.—Sidney Smith was fined 10s, and Jane Hooper alias Richie 5s for this offence. Ebaud in Bankbottct.—Wm. Crabtree and Grace Crabtree appeared on summons to answer three separate informations laid against them for having so dealt with a certain section of land as to violate the Statute of 13, Eliz., cap. v. It appears that under proceedings in the Supreme Court a conveyance of the section referred to was declared fraudulent, and that defendants now refuse so to act as to restore the property to the trustees in the bankrupt estate of Wm. Crabtree for the benefit of his creditors. Mr Cowlisbaw appeared for the prosecution, which was promoted by Messrs O. B. Taylor and T. B. Craig, the trustees. He recited the clause of the Act under which he sued, which says that every party to a fraudulent conveyance knowingly defending the same as bona fide, and made upon good consideration, or assigning any lands so conveyed, shall be liable, upon conviction, to six months’ imprisonment, Mr Holmes, by his clerk, appeared for the defendants, and applied for an adjournment for fourteen days. Mr Oowlishaw had no objection, but would ask for the exaction of subtantial bail, as he had information which led him to believe that defendants intended to abscond. Defendants denied this allegation, and the Bench said for the present the case was adjourned till Monday next, Mr Oowlishaw then to show cause why bail should be required.
