THE BRINDISI MAIL SERVICE
[Br Telegraph.] WELLINGTON. January 3, In reference to the fact that no authoritative time table regulating the Galle-Brindisi service for the year 1881 has as yet been issued, the Secretary to the Postal Department explains that, as it is probable that existing arrangements will be continued a provisional time table has been prepared on the basis of that for 1880; therefore it is only approximately correct. With the departure from the Bluff on the 11th February, and the arrival in Wellington on the 4th of March, 1881, the existing agreement with the Union Steamship Company for the conveyance of the English-Brindisi mails between Melbourne and New Zealand expires, after which the Brindisi mails will be conveyed by chance steamers to and from Melbourne. The mails from New Zealand will be sent by the last steamer timed to arrive in Melbourne prior to the departure of the contract vessel for Galle, and mails from London will be forwarded to New Zealand by the first steamer leaving Melbourne after the arrival of the steamer from Galle. The arrival and departure of mails at and from Melbourne and London by the steamers of the Orient line are also given. Specially addressed correspondence intended to be forwarded by the Orient steamers from Melbourne will be forwarded from New Zealand by the last steamer timed to reach Melbourne before the departure of the steamers of the Orient line. If marked “ via Naples,” letters, &0., should reach London seven days earlier than if taken on to Plymouth by steamer.
