Lilly ; Handicapper, Mr K i G. Griffith; Clerk of the Soulea, Mr J. I Wheeler. The annual mee'ing eamo off ah Eangiora on Saturday (Now Year's Day), tho r.tewards being favored with, very pleasant weather. The ohango in tho date did not, however, affect the attendance favorably, the visitors j being much fewer than has hitherto been tho oaoo. The course was in capital order, the going being very good. Tho arrangements made by the committeo were ezcollent, and tbe majority of t,ho various officials, most of wbom were old hands at the game, wore sue--coauful in the discharge of their duties. Mr Roberts was tho caterer, and Mr Higgins superintended at the confectioner's booth, both giving much satisfaction. Sport was •upposed to commence with tho open Hurdle Raao, but only Clarence putting in an appearance, the race fell through. Pour saddled up for the Distriot Hurdles, which was a capital race, the local animals jumping in very good form. Waikari, carefully ridden by G. Rowland, won pretty comfortably at the finish, while Supplejack fell during the race, giving his rider a very nasty fall. He was promptly attended by Dr. MacOarthy, who found that be was suffering fram concussion of the brain, in addition to a broken wrist. A very creditable field of five two yearolds saddled up for tho Ashley County Plate. Zella, a nico looking daughter of Defamer, was made the favorite, and though she had not any the boßt of the start, she won very easily at the finish. She was well ridden by D. Hawkins, a youngster who will soon mako a nice horseman. Sultan was left at the post, whilo Northern Belle showed -during halt the race a great turn of foot. The result of the North Canterbury Cup was ■other a surprise to a good many. Only three went to the post, and tho winner rather unexpectedly turned up in Farewell, who, to tho astonishment of a large section of tho visitors, appeared on the card as carrying Gat 121bs. As the weight originally put on her by the handicappers was Sat, and as the oommittee altered this entirely on their own account after the owners of Huntingdon and Randwick had aocepted, of course on tho understanding that Farewell was to carry her advertised impost of Bjfc, both Messrs Mason and H. Yallance naturally entered protosts against the stakes being paid over to tho winner. The case will be considered by tho stewards on Tuesday. Huntington out up very badly in the race under notice, clearing off the course twice. Four saddled up for the Farmers' Plate, which was won pretty easily by Zoe. Only three weighed out for the Publican's Purse, the two Yaldhurst representatives both coming out to meet Huntingdon. The last-named bolted again, followed by Yaldhnrst, with whom Mr Mason declared to win, but the latter being soonest back on tho course, cantered in an easy winner. Huntingdon could not bo induoed to race after being brought back, aid Randwick was second. Waikari won the Ladies * Purse from five others, of whom Young Barbarian and Marquis were most fanoied, while the Hack Race produced a field of eight and a winner in Mr Stark's Barbary. Five cried content, with their weights in the Consolation, which would have been a very close finish but for the falling of Huntingdon and Marquis. As it was, Supplejack won easily. Mr Le Seuer was present with his Pari Mutnel, and passed through it during the day £235. Details aro appended. Distbict Hurdle Race Handicap, 15 sova.
