" A Sundowner " forwards the following communication, dated December 28th: —I will now, as promised, give you the straight tips on the various events to be contested here on the 31st of the present month. Upon consulting the entry list I find it is filled up very well, in fact far beyond expectation, which augers well for the club's progress. Starting with the first item on the card, the Maiden Plate, out of a probable seven starters I will select three, viz.—Jimmy, Shark (Brown's), and Castile, to fill the places. The latter, the Knottingly.Tantrums filly, appears to have been over trained, otherwise I should have selected her for first place. For the Open Handicap, of the two West Coasters, Banker, lOst, and Kensington, Bst 51b, I prefer the latter, but I do not think either of them are good enough to beat Don Juan with 9st 41b, albeit rumor has it the Don has gone crooked. Of the rest I think Tawera, 9at, will run into a plaoe, and Spider I take for an outside chance ; to sum up, if fit and well the Don will win, followed closely by Kensington end Tawera; for choice 1 take Kensington for second. Old Shark heads the list for the Hurdles with llßt 41b, a weight that will not trouble iiim, but as the distance is only one and a-half miles, I must fall back upon his namesake with 10st 101 b, ft good, honest little horse, with a good turn of foot, and I fully expect to see him first past the post when the time comes. Of the others Tawera, if he be in a jumping humor, will be the best. The Cup I cannot say anything about, as the handicap is not yet out. The Ladies' Purse, being a district race, I fanoy we shall
see a very close finish between Don Juan and Towers, as it was last year, but I think the Don will turn the tables on last year's winner, as the weights aro heavier, which will not suit Tawera, who, like your humble servant, prefers a light load and a very short journey.
