PREBBLETON.
Some time ago the Prebbleton Domain Board decided on publicly throwing open the domain to the public, and with a view to making it a general holiday, arranged with the school committee to hold the.annual school treat on the same occasion. The day fixed upon was the 23rd inet, when a great number of school children with their parents and friends assembled and partook of the good things provided by the school committee. During the afternoon various games were played, and when the children dispersed' at 5 p.m. every one appeared, to have thoroughly enjoyed themselves. About 2 p.m. Mr Peryman, the chairman of the Domain Board, addressing those assembled said that he had been requested on behalf of a number of gentlemen residing in Prebbleton.to present Mr Edward Prebblo with,a gold watch and chain as a slight acknowledgment of his munificent gift to the people of the village of a greater.portion of the ground on which they were now enjoying, themselves. Perhaps they were not all aware of the fact that to Mr Prebble’s generosity they were indebted for this recreation grounds When the recreation committee were in a fix as to the selection of a suitable piece of land for this purpose he came forward, and in the most generous manner offered this section, which offer the committee gratefully accepted, and the present proceedings were intended to ehow Mr Prebblo that the public fully appreciated hie largo heartednesa and liberality. In years to come the value of the gift would perhaps be more fully understood. At present it was a. recreation ground of which Probblaton might well bo proud. It was a pity that other colonists would not emulate Mr Prebble by giving pieces of land for the same purpose wherever townships were formed. Ho (Mr Prefcble) bed: set an oxamplo that might well bo copied by some of our wealthy men in other districts. Addressing Mr Prebble, Mr Poryman said—“ I have gpeat pleasure in asking, on behalf of the people of Prebbleton, that you will accept this gold watch and chain, &0., as a slight token of their thankfulness for your kindness in giving the place of land on which we now stand to thorn j and that you may live many years to use it is their heartfelt wish, ’’ Mr Prebble, in a few sensible words, replied, thanking them for the expression of good will, and the handsome present that he held in hi# hand ,ho assured them it would he greatly prized by him. The watch was a gold hunting watch, with a suitable inscription on the inside of the face, and Mr iVebblo’s monogram on the outside, and a tsaseive gold albert, oh&in and pendant.
