LOWER HEATHCOTE RACES. President—G. G. Stead, Esq. Stewards —Messrs Atwood, Hale, Lnnn, Garland, Bamford, Brown, Beaumont, Tiekncr, Delamain, Deacon, Dyer, Piper, D. Orange. Judge— P. Pavitt. Starter—J. W. Davie. Handicapper—E. G. Griffith, Clerk of the Scales—A. Dunbar. Clerk of the Course— E. W. Millett. Treasurer —A. Dunbar.
The second annual meeting of the Lower Heathcote Racing Club came off yesterday. There was a very marked improvement in every respect on the little commencement made last year. The enthusiastic sportsmen of the neighborhood had in the meantime laid out a new course and put up a saddling paddock, not to say thst the programme was of a very different kind from the first modest little affair. The various officials were most painstaking in the discharge of their duties, and, with the exception of the first race, the various events were started with fair punctuality. This was to a great extent duo to the exertiona of Mr Millett, whoso services had been secured by the club as clerk of the course. Mr Davis got his fields away very creditably, while Mr Dunbar made a capital clerk of the scales. Mr James Campbell acted as official timekeeper. The catering in the two refreshment departments was entrusted respectively to Messrs Ravenhill and Bashford, both of whom we fancy must have had a good time. The weather being particularly fine, the attendance was very large, but the wind rising in the afternoon, the dust was a caution, The course was very fair going, considering how lately it has been made, but there is a very sharp turn near the river, on which it is inadvisable to put up a hurdle, as on this occasion. There was a rumor before the horses made their appearance that the hurdle race was likely to prove a walk over, but this turned out to be incorrect, as both Levant and Mireille saddled up to meet Clarence, who was a tremendous favorite, but ho got away with Mr Bradley alter running round the second hurdle, and was right out of it. Mireille, who was clearly not herself, was never dangerous from the start. Stella was an absentee from both cross country events, the latter of which was a District Hurdle Race. Her defection reduced this event to a field of three. Of these Mr Piper’s Beer Tax, a very useful looking horse, was the most inquired for, and he won pretty comfortably, after a capital race with old Te Kooti, who was in good form. Kathleen was not fast enough for her two competitors. In the absence of Volunteer and Virginia Water, the event of the day, the Lower Heathcote Cup of 100 sovs, resolved itself into a match between Randwick and Luna. Of the two the mare had a trifle the call in the betting. She made play for a mile and a half, when Randwick closed with her, and had her quite safe at the last turn, winning pretty easily. The time was slow. A trio saddled up for the District Elat Race, Levant being a strong favorite. She justified the confidence of her numerous backers by winning comfortably from Beer Tax, who ran .very well for a mile. Reindeer was quite outpaced, and not content with being thoroughly convinced of this fact, he jumped a fence and fell in the road. As was expected there was a capital field for the Trotting Race, two only of the thirteen acceptors who figured on the card being absent. As it turned out, Our Pony was by far the most fancied by those who were supposed to know a bit, and well ridden by Mr W. Thompson she went throughout in capital form, and won with consummate ease. One or two of the outsiders who were supposed by their respective owners to be good things for this race were clearly short of pace ; other favorites broke repeatedly, and the only two within cooey of the winner at the finish wore Malvina (who trotted in very good form), and an old gentleman of the name of Jack, who finished second and third respectively. The Consolation was a gift to Clarence, while the Hack Race, which produced a field of nine, fell to Mr Brown’s useful little horse, Butcher Boy. Mr Le Sueur’s Pari Mutuel was on the ground, and appeared to do fairly.
Handicap Hurdle Race of 50 sovs.; nomination. 2 sovs.; acceptance, 2 sovs; 2 miles; 8 flights hurdles, 3ft. 6in. Mr E. Barrett’s hr m Levant, by Sorcerer— Venture’s dam, 6 yrs, 10st 51b (A. Keith) 1 Mr J. H. Lunn’s b g Clarence, aged, list 71r> (Mr Bradley) 2 Mr H. Piper’s b m Mireille, 6 yrs. Iflet (Mr Cullen) 3 Shark and Stella were scratched.
Betting—2 and 3 to 1 on Clarence. Mireille and Levant got away pretty well together in front of the favorite. At the first hurdle, Mireille refused and Levant and Clarence ran together to the second hurdle, which, being rather awkwardly situated, they both ran round. Clarence overpowered his rider and wont once round the course on his own account before coming to the hurdle again. Levant, however, was more speedily brought round, and thus obtained so strong a lead that she was never caught. Mireille overhauled Clarence about half a mile from home, and a good race between them ensued for second place, terminating in favor of Clarence. Time —smin. 59aeos.
On arriving at the scales Mr Lunu entered a protest against Levant, on the ground that she had not jumped the first hurdle, and Mr Cullen, the rider of Mireille, entered a protest against Mr Bradley, the rider of Clarence, for crossing him. Both protests were subsequently withdrawn.
Distbict Handicap Huedm Race of 20 sovs.; nomination, 1 sov.; acceptance, 1 sov.; 1J miles; 7 flights hurdles, 3ft. 6in. Mr H. Piper’s b g Beer Tax, 5 yrs, Sat 71b (Cullen) 1 Ml E. Brown’s ch g Te Kooti, aged, 9st 71b (&.. Keith) 2 Mr D. Orange’s b m Kathleen, 6 yrs, 10st (Sheenan) 3 Stella was scratched. Betting in the Pari Mutuel—Even money Beer Tax. Beer Tax was quickest on his legs, and led over the first hurdle, followed by Te Kooti. At the second obstacle Te Kooti took the lead, maintaining his advantage for the next half-mile, when Beer Tax came again and the two led alternately. Coming into the straight for the last time, Beer Tax looked very like a winner, but tiring very much in the run in, and Te Kooti coming again, the issue was a little doubtful. Beer Tax, however, stayad the longest and won by half-alength. Kathleen, in addition to being out-paced, ran round a hurdle. Time—3min. SSJseos, Lower Hbathcote Cup Handicap of 100 sovs., 10 sovs. from stake to go to second horse ; nomination, 2 sovs.; acceptance, 3 sovs.; 2 miles. Mr E. Mason’s oh h Randwick (Barbarian — Gipsey Girl), 5 yrs, 7st 131 b (Hawkins) 1 Mr P. Butler’s ch m Luna, 6 yrs, 7st 101 b
(including 21b overweight) (W. Clifford) 2 Virginia Water and Volunteer were scratched. Betting a trifle in favour of Luna. Luna made play from the fall of the flag and led by a couple of lengths for a mile and a half. Hero Eandwick wont up, and, racing with the mare, disposed of her at the turn, winning easily by three lengths. Time—--3 min 50 isecs. District Flat Rack of 20 sovs; nomination, 1 sov ; acceptance, X sov; II miles, welter weights. Mr E. Barrett’s hr m Levant (by Soicerer— Venture’s dam), 6 yrs, list (A. Keith) 1 Mr H. Piper’s b g Beer Tax, 5 yrs, list 31b (Mr Cullen) 2 Mr D. Gregory’s b g Reindeer, 6 yrs, list 31b (6. Rowlands) 0 Mireille and Te Kooti were scratched.
Betting—3 to 1 on Levant. Beer Tax was the quickest on his legs, and made the running for the first round. Levant now joined issue, and cutting him down in a few strides, cantered in an easy winner. Reindeer was quite outpaced, and in the last round cut it most decidedly, jumping the fence end falling into the road. Time, 2min. 41sec.
Trotting Handicap of 50 sora.; nomination, 2 sovs.; acceptance, 2 sovs. ; lowest weight, lOst; 4 miloa. Mr W. Kirkwood’s b m Oar Pony (275 yds) (W. Thompson) 1 Hr D. The betting was in favor of Oar Pony. Canterbury and Houser were absentees. The race requires but little description. After two rounds the favorite was in front, and trotting in aplendi < style, gradually increased her load, and won with consummate ease. Malvina, who trotted in very fair form, was second, and old Jack, who kept pegging away most determinedly all the way through, was a good third. The rest were outpaced. Tima, 13min. ISseo. Consolation Stakes of 10 sovs., 1 bov. nomination added ; 1 mile,. Mr .1, H. Lnnn’s h s; Clarc.aco (by Eavensworth), aged, ... (W. Clifford) 1

The Hack race bronght a very pleasant day to a sucoessful conclusion in good time. OHOKA RACES. President, Mr George Bailey; Vice-presidents, Messrs E. Butters and P. Denton; Treasurer, Mr Isaac Waiting; Hon. Secretary, Mr Wm. Taylor; Stewards, Messrs H. Eller, P. Moore, W. A. Garnett. T. Burgess,. H. Clothier, T. Lord; Judge, Mr Wm. Buss; Starter, Mr M. The annual races in the Ohoka-Eyreton district were carried out yesterday. There was a large attendance of the public, average fields, and plenty of amusement. The events on the programme were, as usual, run off on the recreation reserve, in the centre of the district. A fair circular course has been laid down, which the rain of Sunday had vastly improved from the somewhat hard condition it has been in for at least a month previously. A most liberal programme was presented. The stewards had increased the value of the Handicap Hurdle Race by 5 sovs on last year, and the Cup Race to 45 sovs. A District Handicap Hurdle Race of 15 sovs had been introduced in place of the District Elat Race of last year. The arrangements of the committee were especially satisfactory. A large tent had been attached to the saddling paddock for the convenience of the officials and all connected with the day’s amusements, in which refreshments were liberally provided ; also for all who patronised the saddling paddock. There was a publican’s booth on the ground, at which Mr Gillies, of the J unction Hotel, hold sway; Mr R. Wilson’s confectioner’s booth, and a variety of amusements of various kinds. The paddock for horses, managed by Mr Collins, was a decided convenience.
The first race on the card was the Handicap Hurdles, for which four came to the post. Supplejack and Bob-In being the favorites, and in the hands of other jocks, a very close race might have boon made by these two. Waikari, who was judiciously ridden, was, however, landed first'.in this event. The District Handicap Hurdle Race was expected to fall to Supplejack, and he won a very game race, beating Rifleman and; Pat. For the District Elat Race three came to the post, Zoo and Barbary having the choice, and the latter looking very fit. The race was won by Barbary, though the rider of Zoe complained of foul play on the part of the rider of the former in stunning the jock of Zoe with his whip. Evidence taken showed that Weir had used his whip freely on young Wilson. The stewards allowed the protest, and disqualified Barbary. The Cup event brought out a better field than last year, when, it will be remembered, Marie Antoinette was first and Huntingdon ran second. Yanduara had the call at the betting, and Farewell was much fancied. Maid of Honour made a bolt of it. Waikari seemed to be entered to make the running for his stable companion, Huntingdon. The latter and Farewell made the best of their fieetness, and a splendid race took place, resulting in favor of Mr Busch’s stable. Mr Yallance protested against Farewell, on the ground that he was run inside, so as to keep Huntingdon out of his course. The stewards decided that Farewell was leading and entitled to take any part of the course, and the stewards were not responsible for keeping any particular side for Huntingdon to pass upon. The Farmers’ Plate was won by Marquis, who ran in very good form; Yanduara second; Doubtful third. Romeo was scratched in this as well as the Oup event. Nina ran a fair fourth. Handicap Hurdle Race, 25 sovs; 2 miles, over eight flights of hurdles; second horse 5 sovs out of the stakes. Mr H. Vallance’s hr g Waikari, 5 yrs, 9st7lb (G. Mnrfit) 1 Mr T. Denton’s oh g Supplejack, aged, 10st 41b (Kettenberg) 2
Mr A. Larkin’s ch g Rifleman, 6 yrs, 9st 71b (J. Martin) 0 Mr T, MoNaught’s b o A Bob-in, 4 yrs, list (T. Tyler) 0 The quartette found a good start. When well away Rifleman took the lead, but was soon caught up by A Bob-in, who made the oace a very merry one, as his boy could not hold him ; at the second hurdle, however, he baulked and fell out of the hunt; Waikari then came to the fore, and was never reached, winning easily, with at least a chain to spare. Supplejack, hard driven to regain ground, lost on the flat. Rifleman was a fair third. District Handicap Hurdle Back. 15 sovs.; over six flights of hurdles. Distance, 1J miles. Second horse to receive 3 soys, from the fnnds. Mr T. Denton’s ch g Supplejack, aged, 10st lOlba (ICettenberg) 1 Mr Q. Kinley’a b g Pat, aged, Hist ((J. Ward) 2 Hr A. Larkin’s ch g Rifleman, 6 yrs, 10st (T. Lynskey) 0 Mr Duncan effected a capital start, Pat going away with the lead, Supplejack keeping close to his heels. At the third hurdle the latter lost ground, but came on again, beating off Rifleman, and at the last hurdle passed Pat, coming in winner by about six lengths, Supplejack having a good spurt in hand. The result was received with vociferous cheering at the success of the local horse. District Plat Race, 15 sovs ; for horses which have not won public money ; weight for ago. Distance, 1£ miles. Second horse to save stakes. Mr S. Wilson’s b m Zoe, 5 yrs, 9st 41bs (Wilson) 1 Mr M. C. Moran’s b g Tim, 4 yrs, 9st (vV. Lynskey) 2 Mr W. Stark’s b g Barbary, 4 yrs, 9st (Weir) 0 This start was a very indifferent one, Barhary and Zoe both appearing to pull up when 200 yards away. The former then went away on wings, passing the rails with a strong lead, Tim vainly attempting to pass Zoe. Past the turn Zoe was sent along, and the two made a good race, Barbary having the lead by about a length. A protest lodged by the owner of Zoe against Barbary was subsequently allowed.
Ohgka and Etbbton Cup Handicap, 45 sovs ; nomination, 2 sovs ; acceptances, 10s. Distance, 2 miles. The second horse to receive 10 sovs out of the stakes. Mr P. Mr Powell’s Vanduara was scratched. A splendid start was made, the .five all getting on to their legs at once and well away. Maid of Honour went off with a strong lead, but in half-a-milo he pulled his rider and went clean off the course. Waikari and Vanduara then came up, the former with a slight lead, Huntingdon and Farewell in waiting attendance. When they passed the rails, the order obtained was Waikari, Huntingdon, Farewell on the lead. The pace was made very fast, and an exciting chase at the back of the course took place, out of which Farewell and Huntingdon made a fast race for home. Farewell before reaching the straight came away about a chain, and in the straight took inside running, when Huntingdon’s rider endeavored foolishly to get inside, but failed, Farewell winning amid a loud buret of applause by about a length. The time of the race was about 4 min.
