ATTEMPTED MURDER.

A tragical aceno occurred at Templeton on Saturday last, the particulars of which came to hand yesterday. At about 7 o’clock on the day in question, a man named W. P. Gibson came to the house of one Mrs. Kerrison, and enquired for the latter’s sister who was residing there, but between whom and Gibson there is eaid to have been an intimacy some time ago. The girl, Charlotte by name did not come out, and Gibson (who appeared to be troubled in mind and agitated) asked Kerrison to go with him and have some liquor. This offer being refused, ha produced a bottle of brandy, out of which Kerrison took a glass, as also did a woman named Mrs Kinley, residing with Kerrison. Gibson then, after asking to see Miss Kerrison, once again went away from the house, but only proceeded about 400 yards when he returned, and standing opposite the building took his coat off’ and threw it on the ground. It was then noticed that he had a pistol in his hand, and the woman Kinley approached him with the object of warning him not to be rash. Gibson told her to stand off, and pointed the pistol at her, seeing which Kerrison rushed from the house, and Gibson then turned the pistol towards him (Kerrison), aiming at his heart, and fired. The bullet entered Kerriaoa’s left breast and passed along the collarbone, piercing, it is supposed, the lungs. H» did not fall but ran inside the house, and Gibson fired another shot from tha revolver at him as ha ran, bui fortunately it did not take effect. Gibson then fired a third shot over Mrs Kinlsy’s head and went away. This account is ohiefiy taken from a statement made to our reporter by Mra Kinley. Kerrison was brought to town yesterday and conveyed to the Hospital, whore he now lies in a precarious condition. The detectives were Bent ia quasi of Gibson, whom they arrested and brought to town yesterday evening. It is stated that “ Ouida,” the novelist not being satisfied with an apology from Mi Labouchcre, for certain criticisms on the morality of her works, intends, io institute M action against him.
