[Per e.s. Arawata, at the Bluff,] LONDON, December 16. The new French steam service by the Mecsageries Maritimes, intended to run to Australia, will bo ready in two years. It will be first a monthly and then a fortnightly service.
A battalion of Scots Guards and also one battalion of the Bide Brigade are being held in readiness to proceed to Ireland. Army furloughs have been cancelled amongst the troops serving in Ireland. The Protestant Church at Ballinahinch, a small village in county Down, has been entered and completely wrecked. An attempt to murder M. Brationo at Bucharest failed. Ha was only slightly wounded. The offender has been arrested. Mr Walter Hughes has been knighted. LONDON, December 15. Greece has arranged to obtain a new loan at Paris.
The “ Daily News ” says that Franca and England have united in their policy with regard to the claims of Greece. The “ Cologne Gazette ” says that the intended cession of Crete by the Forte to Germany is made with a view to transfer the island to Greece in exchange for a surrender of the claims of Thessaly and Epirus. The Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland has announced its resolve to frustrate the Land League. It is alto intimated that, in consequence of the numerous requests for arms, the Grand Lodge has arranged for a supply from England, to be distributed in the West and South of Ireland.
Mr Oallan, M.P. for Lonth, who was convicted of libelling Mr Sullivan, his colleague in the representation of Loath, has been fined £SO.
LONDON, December 20.
The “ Daily News ” states that Herr Wetendorf returns to Berlin, announcing that the reform of the Turkish finances is hopeless.
The Anli-Jewish feeling at Berlin is increasing. A large meeting has been held, at which it was resolved to treat the Jews as Boycott was treated in Ireland by the peasants.
