HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

An adjourned special committee meeting of the society was held on Wednesday evening, Dec. 22nd. Present—The President (Mr E. 0. !J. Stevens) in the choir and Messrs Webb, Manning, Murphy, Turner, Oarrick, Beade, Guntrip, Gray, Nairn, and T. Jones (hon. secretary). The sub-committee, appointed at the last meeting to make enquiries in reference to the memorial to the late Mr Greenaway, reported that they were unable to procure a satisfactory photograph from which to obtain an oil painting of their late secretary, and therefore the proposal for the portrait, with duplicate copy, could not be carried out. They also reported that Mrs Greenaway expressed her desire to commemorate the association of her late husband with the society by herself giving a special prize annually in connection with the rose show. The remaining suggestion of a memorial stone for erection in the cemetery was then considered, and resulted in their recommending the purchase of a suitable marble obelisk which they had inspected and approved of. It was resolved that the report of the sub-committee bo adopted, and that a special general meeting of the society be called to consider the proposal. The hon. treasurer, Mr Beade, reported that he had reinvested the sum of £155 5s on satisfactory terms. In reply to a communication forwarded to him by the secretary in reference to an alleged infringement of rule 9 of the society, at the spring show, Mr W. Gregory had an interview with the committee, and stated that the out blooms exhibited by him in the open class No. 54 in the schedule had been grown by himself, and had been in his possession for a period longer than required by the rule, and therefore denied the truth of the complaint lodged against him. It was resolved that Mr Nairn be required to produce proof to the committee of his allegation in the case; the enquiry to take place after the ordinary meeting on 4th January proximo. It was pointed out that it was of the first importance that the rules laid down for the guidance of exhibitors at the flower shows should bo faithfully and honorably adhered to, and the thanks of the society are due to all those who honestly endeavor to maintain them in their integrity. Mr Guntrip was elected to fill the vacancy on the certificate committee. In reference to the late Mr Andrew Duncan, it should be mentioned that at the last committee meeting a resolution was unanimously passed requesting the president to write to Mrs Duncan and family, expressing the committee’s sense of the great loss the society had sustained by his death, and their sympathy and condolence with them in their bereavement. The members of the society will exhibit cut blooms of carnations, piootees, antirrhinums, and pentstemons, and also gooseberries at the monthly committee meeting on Tuesday, January 4th.
