OVERCROWDING OF STEAMERS.
As the excursion season seems to have fully set in, it may not be out of place to call the attention of the authorities to the very great danger attending the overcrowding of steamers. Under ordinary circumstances the boat accommodation provided in case of accident is small enough—to our mind far too limited—but when, as is often the case, steamers are crowded to excess with passengers, it becomes a serious ' matter. It must also be recollected that a very large percentage of the passengers on these occasion are ladies and children, who, in case of danger, would be almost entirely helpless. Given boat accommodation under the most favorable circumstances for about two-thirds of the passengers, crow, &c, what must be the proportion when the vessel is crammed to excess. It may be argued that the trips are but short, but even so, it is quite possible for an accident to occnr on even so short a trip as from here to Akaroa, and if it did, the loss of life would be great. What we wish to call attention to is this, that it appears absolutely necessary, not only during excursion times but ordinarily, that the boat accommodation as at present enforced should be largely increased, and also that the overcrowding now so largely carried on should be prevented.
