THE ENGLISH MARKETS.
The following is Messrs Miles Bros, and Co.’s Colonial Produce Report, dated London, November 4th:— WOOL. Trade in onr woollen districts continues to show improvement, especially in the worsted branches, where a very fair business is doing, and the stocks on hand are therefore likely to show considerable redaction by the 24th instant, the opening night of the November series. Several lots of bought in wools have been disposed of privately at some advance on the prices hid at the late sales, and these have included a few bales of colonial crossbreds, which descriptions have been favorably affected in sympathy with domestic wools, for which there is an increasing demand, owing to orders which have been placed in hand for the Eastern markets. In granary trade appears to be fairly active, but, in France no improvement can be noted. At the Antwerp sales of South American wools from the 19th to 28th October, 11,342 bales were sold out of 16,494 bales offered, and the prices obtained were equal to those ruling at the July auctions for these wools. The new arrivals to date comprise:— Bales. New South Wales and Queensland ... ... 8,000 Victoria ... 10,408 South Australia.,, ... 3,650 WesternJAnstralia 211 Tasman* ... 071 New Zealand 12,830 Capo and Natal 35,737 Total 71,207 And about 35,000 hales old wools. About 15,000 bales to 20,000 hales of the new clip will probably be offered at these sales. WHEAT AND FLOUR. A slightly firmer tone baa prevailed on the corn market daring the past fortnight, although no actual improvement is noticeable in prices. l A larger business has been done in Australian .wheat, and with decreasing stocks prices are now rather firmer than they were a month since. New Zealand’s have been in larger supply, and ca business has been rather more restricted in these particular descriptions, only the best samples have fully maintained their value. The visible supply of wheat in America is estimated at 17,400,000 bushels, against 25,500,000 bushels at this time last year, and as winter is approaching -and shipments from that quarter are likely to show a falling off prices will not probably show any considerable decline for some little time. France acd Russia are both purchasers of American wheat. Off this coast the Sarah Bell was sold at 4Ea for Hull, and c.f. and i. sales of Australian wheat,October 13th, have been made at 46s fid to 48a. We quote South Australian wheat at 51s to 535; Victorian, 50s to 525; New Zealand Talavera, 5Cs to 54s ; ordinary, 46s to 48a ; inferior, 41s to 45s per 4961ba. Australian flour, superfine, 34s fid to 35s per 2801b5., and New Zealand superfine, 32s to 345. New Zealand oats, fine, 28s to 35s per Imperial qr., and common feed, 24s to 2So. New Zealand barley, fine malting, 43a to 45s per 4481b5. New Zealand beans, 44s to 46s per 480Ihs. tallow and hides. The tallow market has been firm, with a good demand for Australian sorts, especially for sweet qualities. The present value of good to fine mutton is 35s fid to 375, and fair to fine beef 33s to 34s 6d, whilst the very fine (fit for edible purposes) is worth 37s to 39s per cwt. The sales have been large—viz., 7153 casks, and the stock in importers’ hands to-day is 7800 casks. Hides at the last sales were in fair request for the lighter averages, hut heavy weights were dull of sale, and declined £d per lb. We quote New Zealand heavy ox S|d and 5Jd, and light and cows S.id and sjd per lb. PRESERVED MEATS. In tinned meats boiled mutton is firm, stocks being limited, but boiled boef is still low. The sales of compressed beef have not been so largo as usual. The market for fresh meat remains very dull, and prices are lower, some of the later shipments from America having realised very low ratesBank rate, 2J per cent.
