The Wanaka will make an excursion to Akaria on Thursday nest, leaving Lyttelton about half-past eight, reaching Akaroa in time for the regatta and sports. She will return again in time for passengers to return to town by the 11 45 p.m. train. She will leave for Dunedin on Friday, on arrival of the noon train from Christchurch. ... . , An occurrence in the way of signalling took place yesterday, which probably never happened before. Early in jthe < morning the flags for two barques from the southward ware hoisted at the yardarm at the inward look out station. About nine o’clock these were increased by the addition of another flag of the same description, aad before eleven o’clock another was added to the number, making in all four barques approaching the Heads from the southward, together. Lator on, and before either of the above were inside the harbor, a further flag was added, indicating the approach of a brigantine, but the coincidence of four barques being signalled together as they were yesterday, has seldom if over occurred in the signalling history of the port. It may be mentioned also that two of the vessels wore from Calcutta, and had left there within a few days of each other, o third was from Glasgow, and the fourth came in from Tasmania. The brigantine proved to be the Elibank Castle bound from tins port to Oamaru, and which had run back to await a change of wind. _ The City of Tanjore, formerly ship-ngged, but now altered to a barque, arrived in Port yesterday from Calcutta in command of Captain Dow. Her cargo consists of oornsacka, and is consigned jointly to Messrs P. Cunningham and Co. and Messrs Eoyse, Stead and Co. Calcutta was left on October 3rd, the Equator crossed 20 days liter, and on November 25th, when the •hip was about the meridian [of Cape Lenwin, crossed in 48 S., a severe gale was encountered. The decks were swept by terrific seas, sails were carried away and bulwarks were damaged to a considerable extent. Tasmania was passed on December 3rd and the Snares made December 7th. Captain Dow reports that the City of Lahore was likely to leave Calcutta a week or so after him, and the British Sceptre was loading. The steamship Durham steamed direct from the jetty at noon yesterday into the stream, and last evening started on her voyage to London via Cape Horn. The vessel was drawing on an even keel about 2(Jft., good sailing trim, and Iter commander. Captain Anderson, E.N., who, since his arrival, has made a host of friends, expects that she will be in the English Channel in fifty days from now. Her cargo, consisting chiefly of wool, should his expectations be realised, will, therefore, reach the London market in time for the February sales. A large quantity of butter, some 820 kegs, forms part of her cargo, and it is to be hoped will find profitable sale there. The next steamer to leave this colony direct for Home will be the Northumberland, due in a few days at Wellington. She is consigned to the New Zealand Shipping Company, by whom she will be despatched next month or early in February from Wellington. „ „ The barque Thurso, one of Mr C. W. Turner’s fleet, arrived yesterday from Calcutta with a cargo of cornsacks, woolpacks, gunny bags, rice, tea, and oil. Captain Eaddon reports leaving Calcutta on September 30th, crossed the equator on October 24th, and had variable weather to making Stewart’s Island on the 7th instant. Since she was last here the Thurso has visited both Cape Town and Mauritius, and the condition in which she came into port yesterday, after the round voyage, is most complimentary to Captain Baddou and his officers. She was towed into a berth at No. 4 jetty. The barque West Biding arrived yesterday from Glasgow with a full general cargo. She left there on August 27tb, and comes consigned to Mr C. W. Turner. The Firth of Lome was to follow her for this port. POET OP SUMNEE. Sailed —December 13. Tongariro, p,s„ 38 tons, Ashman, for Waikerikikeri. SHIPPING TELEGEAMS. Auckland, December 13.
