The barque Palace, t.aptain Horne, arrived yesterday from Newcastle, with a cargo of pijea and. timber for Messrs Hawkins and Martindale’s breastwork contract. The barque made a good trip of ten days, and reports that the Spa sdwell would follow bar a few days later. The yacht built specially by T. Niool at Auckland to compete at the Melbourne regatta measures 38 tons. Her length over all is 64ft, «n the water line 55ft, beam 13ft draught, aft 10ft, forward 6ft. She carries 11 tons of lead, including what is in the keel and inside. She was named the Tanewha. The Tanewha is a mythical sea-dragon or monster, supposed to inhabit lonely caves and cliffs on the coast or Islands, and the Maoris—at least of the old school—have an awfnl dread of him. In bygone days, whenever a place likely to he one of hia numerous homes was approached, an invocation, appropriate to the occasion, was chanted, with a view to averting disaster at his hands. The barque Thurso, with a cargo of cornsacks and woolpacks for her owner, arrived thia morning from Calcutta, and the City of Taujore, with a like cargo, for Messrs Eoyse, Stead, and Co., and Messrs P. Cunningham and Co. The barque West Riding, from Glasgow, Mr C. W. Turner, agent, arrived this morning, and the barque Planter, from Port Esperance. A brigantine, from the South, was signalled as our. express left Port to-day. ARRIVAL OF THE SAN PEANCISCO MAIL. Auckland, December 13, The Australia has arrived from San Francisco with the. mail. She left San Francisco wharf at 2.50 pm. of November 21st.
