INVERCARGILL SHOW.
[By Tklbobaph.J INVEROARGILL, Dacember 9. The fourteenth annual show of the Invercargill Agricultural and Pastoral Association was held to-day. The weather was glorious throughout the day, and the attendance of the public was good, about £9O being taken at the gates. The entries this year exceeded those of any previous Jyear, being 465. The show of sheep was not large, but the quality of most of the exhibits was very superior, especially in the long woolled classes. The merinos were poorly represented, considering the extent of merino country. Messrs. AD. Johnson and Mclntyre were the principal exhibitors. In Lincolns, the Messrs Sutton carried all before them. Mr F. Sutton's two-toothed ram was awarded the champion cup as the best long woolled ram in the yard. The Bhow of cattle was superior to former years. In the shorthorns Mr James Maben's bull in the aged class was awarded first prizs and the champion cup, Mr A. Benam's Sir Sercules scored a good seoond. For two-year-olds Mr W. Patterson's Hastings was first, and in the yearling class Mr A. Benam's roan Knight secured first honors, a bull belonging t j the New Zealand and Australian Land Oompany taking second place. In the olasses for cows and heifers, Mr T. Ayson was the largest exhibitor. The pernicious practice of stocking milch cows was observablo hero as at Ghristchurob, Dunedin, and elsewhere. As is usual in all the Southern shows the Ayrshires were well represented, but with the exception of two or three of the exhibits the animals were smaller than is necessary, except for the scantiest of pasture lands. The New Zealand and Australian Land 00. exhibited a grand specimen of the polled Angus breed, a bull recently imported, bred by the Earl of Airlie. He was the winner of the third prize at the Highland Society's show in the two year-old class. A cow of the same breed was also exhibited by the same company, bred as the bull, and also a prize taker in the Highland Sooiety's show. The show of draught horses was decidedly the best ever held by the society. There were seventy entries. Mr John Mcintosh's Southern, a grand upstanding bright bay, took first honors, and the prize offered for the best dressed horse. Mr A. Oalder's three-year old oolt by Prince Charlie took first and the president's cup, value 10 guineas, for the best draught entered, foaled after July Ist, 1877. There were thirty mares offered for competition, aad it may be said of them that they would have done credit to any show yard in the colony. Mr J. B. Sutton also exhibited some grand animals. In implements the Walter A. Wood's machine received a special priza, Osborne's being highly commended.
