THE CHRISTCHURCH AND SYDENHAM MARKETS.
The public will see in our local columns the manner in which dealers have snapped np the stalls in the new Broadway Market. It serves to point what we have always urged, namely, that the erection of a permanent market for Christchurch would be a sound commercial undertaking, as well as a public convenience. As regards the present unsightly stalls opposite the old Post-office, they serve a useful purpose no doubt, and will be let for the ensuing year at considerably enhanced prices, but the erection of a permanent building, with all necessary adjuncts, need not have been shirked by the City Council. The new Sydenham market is situated at the junction of Colombo street and the South town belt, and is, consequently, at a point where direct lines from Sydenham, Waltham, and Addington may be said to converge. It is favourably placed, but its site cannot, of course, be compared with its more northerly rival. It has been erected on speculation by private individuals, and the success of their enterprise proves conclusively that their forecast was correct. Tho result has exceeded their most sanguine expectations, and they will make money out of the affair. We trust that, after this proof of the way in which dealers are prepared to rent sites in such places, the Council will not again hesitate to erect what is really wanted for the municipality—a permanent market.
