POPULAR SPORTS.
A meeting of the popular sports’ oommittos was held at the City Council offices yesterday. Present—Mr S.P. Andrews, M.H.H, in the chair, Messrs Alport, Lambert, Walkden, Drewett, Hebden, M. Davie, Crooks, Oogan, Samuels, F, Davie, Hobbs, Farr, Thornton, and Gapes. The minutes of the P r ® vl °^ B meeting naving been read and confirmed, tae hon. secretary, Mr Haskins, read a letter from the Government, stating that they had no power to proclaim a public holiday, bavin;: no control in that respect over the Banks, and could not interfere with private individuals; but they could give orders for the Government offices to be closed on the day mentioned. Mr Haskins further stated that ho had written to the Under Secretary, asking him to have the public offices closed on the 16th inst., and he expected to receive an answer shortly. It was resolved—“ That the Mayor and Mr Gapes be a deputation to wait on the Bank managers with a request that they would observe the sports’ day as a holiday, and the Mayor will be asked to make a general request in the same direction to the citizens, Mr Alport reported that he had made satisfactory arrangements with Mr Elder respecting the ground, and Mr Walkden intimated that the tents were being made in accordance with instructions. Mr Alport_ also remarked that he had hopes of success in regard to the sale of the booths, and with regard to the gates, he believed that gentlemen would be found to fill the important office of inducing the public to “ part.” It was decided to grant the request of the Friendly Societies Fete committee for the loan of ropes, &o. The name of Mr Sheath was substituted for that of Mr Waohsman as clerk of the course. The committee then adjourned till Tuesday next.
